The Buccaneers announced shortly before Thursday’s practice that they had re-signed WR Tiquan Underwood. In order to make room on the 53-man roster, WR Preston Parker was released.
Underwood spent training camp and preseason with Tampa Bay and was the most productive wide receiver for the Bucs in four preseason games with nine catches for 158 yards. Underwood was released on August 31st, the deadline for the final roster cuts. Underwood will once again be reunited with his former college coach at Rutgers, Greg Schiano.
Following the release of Underwood, Schiano said it was one of the toughest decisions he had to make and that Underwood was somebody that could be re-signed, if not already signed by another team, later in the season.
With Preston Parker’s bad habit of fumbling punts a continuing problem, Parker was relieved of his punt return duties, and Sammie Stroughter was named the starter.
As a wide out, Parker was targeted two times in as many games, and had zero receptions.
Underwood has good breakout speed and also took reps as a punt returner during preseason practices, but Jordan Shipley who was signed earlier in the week is thought to be the starter against Dallas this Sunday. Shipley will be replacing Stroughter who is suffering from a foot injury.
