The Buccaneers announced Tuesday evening that they have signed PR/WR Roscoe Parrish and waived WR Jordan Shipley.
Shipley's first stint with the Bucs began August 20th after being released by Cincinnati. Tampa Bay waived Shipley on August 31st in order to make the league mandated 53-man roster deadline, but brought him back on September 18th to replace Preston Parker as the team's punt returner. Two days after Shipley's arrival, Parker was released in order to make room for the Bucs to bring back Tiquan Underwood. The following day, the Bucs signed undrafted rookie wide receiver and kick return standout at Stanford Chris Owusu and placed Sammie Stroughter on injured reserve.
Last Sunday marked Shipley's debut as the Bucs' punt returner and the former Longhorn did not fare well. Shipley muffed a punt that cost the Buccaneers as Dallas converted the turnover into three points. Even on the punt returns he fielded cleanly, he was unable to change field position, averaging just 3.3 yards.
Parrish, an eight year veteran, spent his first seven seasons in Buffalo until signing with San Diego in April. The Chargers released Parrish in August and the accomplished punt returner signed with Oakland. Three days later, Parrish was cut when the Raiders needed to trim their roster to 53.
Parrish has played in 77 games with 14 starts and has 135 career punt returns for 1,622 yards and three touchdowns and has returned 29 kickoffs for 685 yards. The speedy former Hurricane has 134 career receptions for 1,502 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Miami native was selected in the second round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Miami by the Bills and led the NFL in punt return average during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The past two years, Parrish's campaigns have been cut short due to injury; in November 2010 Parrish suffered a broken wrist that sent him to the IR and last September Parrish was placed on IR after injuring his left ankle.
