Bucs head coach Greg Schiano spoke with the media Monday afternoon following Tampa Bay's first practice back from the bye week. Schiano discussed the extra days to prepare for Kansas City, the position change at right guard, and gave a brief evaluation of the team through four games.
With the extra day this week are you in a better position and did you start to game plan today as well?
“Yes, we jumped into Kansas City full force today and had a good practice. So it was a good head start.”|

Do you hit the reset button here or how much do you think you learned during the bye week?
“Well, we evaluated a lot of things and if your evaluations are correct and your adjustments are correct then it will help. Without a doubt giving some of the guys a rest from July 26th to last Thursday they have been going pretty hard. It was good to give them a rest. Now we have 12 straight weeks. 12 one game seasons in a row.”

Did you guys get a rest or did you do a lot of self evaluating?
“No, we worked. We worked till the end of the week and then the guys got out of here for a long weekend.”

Are you planning any position changes?
“Well just that we—the right guard spot. We are moving a few guys through there and as we talked about last week. We will probably evaluate that some over this Tuesday the players day off. Then try to kind of lock into something. Maybe one or two guys at the right guard. That has been the position that has kind of been up in the air.”

Is Jeremy Trueblood okay?
“He has some kind of stomach virus or something. He couldn’t practice. He tried, but he just couldn’t. We have a couple guys not feeling so well.”

Does that alter your thoughts about the right guard position?
“Well, I mean it didn’t come up till real late in the morning. Otherwise we probably maybe would not have put pads on. Maybe change the day we put pads, but that’s the way it goes.”

How much of an advantage is it of getting that extra day start to prepare for Kansas City?
“Well, it is just one more day well actually two more days because you introduce the plan today and they are off tomorrow, but they will work and study on it. Just two more days of exposure to Kansas City which certainly should not hurt you. What advantage? I don’t know you can look at all the statistics of bye teams versus nonbye teams and all that stuff. At the end of the day you got to be ready to play on Sunday. Hopefully this extra preparation will make us more ready [and] more prepared.”

Can you talk about Jamal Charles a little bit he seems to be a guy that drives that offense?
“He sure does. He is an extraordinary player. Great acceleration. He has got that something special. You know that home run ability and they are very consistent.”

With Atlanta starting 5-0 is there any sense of urgency that they are starting to get too much separation?
“The rest of the pack? Well, I would be lying if I said I was not rooting for Washington this weekend. We cannot handle what they do. We can only handle what we do. Heck if we would have done a little better job handling it we would not even be talking about this. We cannot do anything about the past, but we can do something about Sunday and that is where all my focus is right now.”

Was that kind of what your message was to these guys?
“What I talk to them about stays with them, but again we are always about the now. Be here and be here right now. You know mentally. Obviously you are here physically, but be here mentally. Try to improve each time we hit the field. Are we a little bit better when we left the field then when we took the field? If you can do that every day then eventually you are going to get pretty good.”

Does the possibility of gaining the passing interference calls enhance your desire to throw the ball down field?
“Well, absolutely it goes into the process. It is not 50/50, but it certainly is—there are a lot of good things. Those fly over yards where you fly over the eight play drive that there could be an off sides [or] a holding penalty and possibly something bad happening. You hit that one play and whether you catch it or you get a PI it ends up in the same spot. Which is a huge difference for me personally over the last 12 years. To me that and the two minute warning are the two biggest differences.”

You have had some time to look back at this team and where would you evaluate this team is at right now?
“Well, kind of like I said last week, we are 1-3. We could be better. We could be worse, but we are what we are. I think we feel physically a little bit better right now after the break. It is a group that is really focused on what they need to do to get better. We talk about doing your job and I think everybody is focused about getting better at their job. As a head coach that is really all you can ask for. We will keep practicing and we will keep playing the games and we are getting better. It just has not been enough so far.”

As you look at your running game and where it sits right now is there more room for LeGarrette Blount than not in terms of being more of a running team?
“Well, like I have said I think those guys can really play off each other well. They are different styles. They are different body types. I think it can serve the whole offense well for them both to have carries. As you mentioned I am not going to pigeon hole myself into this many carries, but I think LeGarrette (Blount) has practiced better the last couple weeks. I think when you prepare better you play better.”

Is Eric Wright feeling better?
“Eric (Wright) was out there and he looked like he was feeling fine. We are excited about that.”

I envy you guys that are able to attend games. I'd be there every week (in club seating air conditioning) if still lived in the area. Go Bucs. Smoke those Chiefs.

Too hot? C'mon Horse, it'll probably only be in the 80's. Just drink a lot of water the night before, wear your big straw hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and keep drinking water (no beer) and you'll be just fine. I'm sure when I "cross the creek" as Culverhouse used to say, it will be at a Bucs game. Don't let the paramedics move me until the game is over........or I start to stink.

scubog, nah still too hot for me; I don't drink anymore either. I'll go to some of the November and December games when it cools off.

So Victoria, who gets the start at right guard this week? In your opinion.

I'm glad their back. I will miss these two 1:00 PM games because it's just too hot for me and one of my grandchildren will sub for me, but I will be listening to it and hopefully catch some plays on the NFL Red Zone. Go Bucs! Time to Win!
