Have you settled your right guard situation yet?
“Not yet. We are working through it.”
Jeremy Trueblood was out there taking some snaps is he leaning in that direction?
“There are a lot of different options. I cannot tell you where it is going yet.”
Does a tackle have to know all the responsibilities of the guard and is it something besides technique that he can just be plugged into that spot?
“I wouldn’t say just plugged in, but Jeremy (Trueblood) is a very intelligent football player. He is very experienced. I think he has a much better chance of grasping things in the short amount of time. His best buddy Davin (Joseph) has played guard next to him for a long time. Different scheme yes, but they work together on so many different things. I think he has got a good understanding. I think they all do. It is just going to be a matter of who we think the best choice is for this week. Again, that’s what we are trying to do. We are trying to win this game against Kansas City.”
What is it like preparing for a team when you do not know who the quarterback will be?
“Well, they have a strong philosophy of what they want to do as a football team. So I think regardless of who the quarterback is they are going to stick to that philosophy. Now within that philosophy plays may change depending who the quarterback is. Which you have to be ready for all those plays anyway it is just which one you will emphasize more in practice. That is where you have to make kind of an educated guess.”
There is not a lot of tape on Brady Quinn though, right?
“Well, he has played. He has played in Cleveland and he has played a little bit here. He has played in the preseason. There is tape out there and we have gotten our hands on pretty much what we need to see. Again, it is the scheme and then what you look at for the individual is kind of his tendencies in [being able to escape] and those kind of things. We have studied up on that.”
Any desire of yours to say let’s just put our five best offensive linemen in some order out there?
“Is there any desire? There is every desire I got, yes. I think you do that here in this level too. Center is the one oddball position because you got a very different skill. Other than that—there is certain times you are trying to put a square peg in a round hole. That may not work. Maybe we are doing that and that’s what we are trying to examine right now and make sure what is the best choice. Certainly the best choice is on the IR (injured reserve) so now we have to find the next best choice and that’s what we are trying to do.”
Could Ted Larsen still start there at right guard?
“No doubt. Ted (Larsen) is part of that equation. I think what happens is everybody else gets the attention because they have not been there. I probably need to just grab Ted (Larsen) and tell him that too. He sees all these guys going in at right guard. He has been working in on Carl (Nicks) side because Carl has missed some, but now Carl was back today. Yes, it is a bit of up in the air, but we will get it settled before game time. [We] will make a decision and then go with it.”
Have you considered using more than one player shuffling guys in and out on game day?
“I don’t like to do that. We have done that. We have played more than one guy, but I kind of like to let the o-line get a feel for each other and build a little bit. It is not to say we won’t.”
Any significance for Jeremy Trueblood having the first rep after warm ups?
“Not really because he was ill Monday. So we were going to split him then and then he didn’t get them. We wanted to get him caught up just to evaluate. So no I wouldn’t read into that.”
Can you talk about the impact Gerald McCoy has been having with the team this year?
“I think Gerald (McCoy) has had a good first quarter to the season. I think what he has done is wet his own appetite and ours for what can be in the future here. He continues to get better. Today I thought he took a step—as a coach you look at every practice—our goal is to get better today. I don’t care if we are this much better today. He did a couple things that I asked him. He came out and I think he got better. Now he may think I always do that, but as a coach you study every clip. I wanted him to get a little better at this [and] he did. The thing that is nice about Gerald (McCoy) is he has the ability to be a super star in this league, yet he takes coaching very well and wants to get better. That’s a good combination to have.”
What is McCoy doing best?
“I just think his get off is elite. When you have such quick twitch and can get off, then you get into a guy and that’s how the havoc starts. And now when you move him inside, he stunts in, he stunts out, he goes straight, now the offensive lineman has to kind of sit there for a second, he can’t just fire out and hit him and that’s very helpful for Gerald. I think that put him at a very advantageous position.”
Can you talk about Mike Williams work off the field?
“I think Mike has just improved steadily since we took over. I don’t know what he was before but I do know what he was when we got here. At first – a little bit resistant but he quickly came on board and he’s just gone like that. I think he’s playing at a high level.”
What are some examples of that?
“Well, he had a new receivers coach, a new way of doing things, a new offense, right, so he had to adjust some of the technique stuff that he does. When you’ve been playing a position for a long time and all of a sudden this new crew comes in and says we’re going to do this, no, no, no you can’t do this, you do it this way. But Mike quickly bought in and has had tremendous results and I think he’s really going to get better. I do. I think he can be a really big weapon for us. And with Vince on the other side it helps him too, obviously. That’s why we did what we did.”
Is just being in a position to win to maybe you get better everyday part of the battle?
“I think that’s always the battle. When you’re winning that’s the battle. It’s the old saying, if you don’t get better you get worse, you don’t stay the same. When you’re not winning, what do we need to do? We just need to get better a little bit each day and get over the hump. I think every team in this league is fighting that same battle. Now to what degree are they capable of focusing on it in the meeting room and the walkthrough and the practice, that to me is what it really boils down to. You want to be better? Play better. How do you play better? You play better by practicing better. And I’ve said that to teams for years. You don’t like the result, the play better. I don’t like the result, I have to coach better. Now that sounds so simple, but the reality is, when you start peeling that away, what does that mean, it means study with more attentiveness, coach and player, present it more logically so the guys get it on the first go. Practice more efficiently, have the plays right that we need to see. You can drive yourself nuts second guessing, are these the right one, but you have to try to get better in every area of the program, whether it’s coaching, cooking, tackling, lifting weights, everything we do around here, we’re trying to raise the level and I’m really confident that that will start to manifest itself into wins and then a lot of wins. But if I wasn’t confident, then we got problems, right. So I’m glad I am. I’m not sure everyone else is, but we’ll get there.”
