Bucs Turner Set to Become New Head Coach At FIU

The Buccaneers offensive success in 2012 has caused other programs to take notice. First P. J. Fleck was hired as the head coach at Western Michigan and now it appears QB coach Ron Turner will be joining Fleck as a head coach in the college ranks, reportedly taking the top job at Florida International.
Success attracts suitors. Just ask former Bucs coach Tony Dungy who lost a number of assistants to promotions during his six seasons in Tampa Bay.

Receivers’ coach P.J. Fleck was the first Bucs coach to find take a promotion elsewhere, and now quarterbacks coach Ron Turner appears set to become the new head coach at Florida International, this according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

Turner joined Greg Schiano’s staff last spring, and along with offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan, helped develop quarterback Josh Freeman into the franchise leader in passing yards in a season (4,065) and TD passes (27).

Besides Fleck and Turner leaving, there is still a chance the Buccaneers could lose Sullivan before the NFL coaching carousel slows down. Sullivan is reportedly set to interview for the Bears head coach opening, which came open after Chicago fired Lovie Smith last Monday.

Turner, brother of former Chargers’ head coach Norv Turner, has been coaching since 1977, including two stints as a college head coach (San Jose State, Illinois) and has also spent a number of years as an NFL assistant, most noticeably with the Bears from 2005-2009.

    Maybe now Schiano can hire the guy they wanted LAST YEAR but were unable to get because the Arizona Cardinals refused to let him out of his contract... John McNulty. He was with Schiano at Rutgers.

    I never really liked Turner historically and I don't know what impact he's had on Freeman, if any. Enjoy FIU.

    Mark I never understood that coaching approach with the Bucs. Wouldn't it have been better having the Q.B. coach on the sideline with Freeman, and the O.C. in the booth? Also how far will Schiano, and Dominik go to bring in competition for Josh, and tell us if Adam Webber has any potential.

    To be honest I didn't even know we had a qb's coach I never saw him talking to Freeman on the sidelines, but maybe after the way Freeman played for the last part of the season I'm not sorry he left.

    He was up in box, since Sullivan is one the sidelines. Really good guy with the media and insightful the few times we got to speak with him.

    I wish him the best.Maybe Coach Turner from Chargers Maybe he would take an assist job with Tampa!
