With on-field success, comes players and agents looking for new contracts.

Bucs wide receiver Mike Williams, who was a fourth-round selection in 2010, has statistically out performed his rookie four-year $2.33 million contract, and reports are the Buccaneers and Williams’ agent Hadley Englehard have begun preliminary talks to extend Williams deal.

Williams burst onto the scene in his rookie season leading all NFL rookies with 65 receptions for 964 yards and 11 touchdowns. In 2011 Williams, along with the majority of the Bucs offense, regressed and despite catching the same number of balls (65), Williams yards (771) and touchdown receptions (3) dropped considerably.

The Buccaneers signed former Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson in the 2012 offseason (five-year, $55.5 million) to be Tampa Bay’s No.1 receiver and the addition of Jackson helped Williams’ development. In 2012, the former Syracuse star notched 63 receptions for 996 yards and a team-leading nine touchdowns.

Englehard spoke to The Tampa Tribune’s Roy Cummings on Tuesday.

"We've had some dialogue and we'll continue to have some dialogue when we get to the (NFL) combine next month,'' Engelhard said. "Both sides have acknowledged that Mike has outperformed his contract.

"Both sides are thrilled with the way Mike has played. Three years, 48 starts, the numbers just speak for themselves. At this point it just makes sense for both sides to negotiate a long-term deal.''

With an escalator clause, Williams is schedules to make $1.4 million in 2013.
