The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Detroit Lions cornerback Roderick Babers on Monday. The 5-foot-9, 192-pound Babers, who was a standout at the University of Texas, had an injury-plagued career with the Lions. The former fourth-round draft pick was released on Mar. 1.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed former Detroit Lions cornerback Roderick Babers on Monday.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 5-foot-9, 192-pound Babers has had an injury-plagued career since entering the NFL in 2003 as a fourth-round draft pick with the New York Giants.

After being released by the Giants before the '03 regular season began, Babers was picked up off of waivers by Detroit, where he played in just seven games in two seasons due to shoulder injuries. The Lions released Babers last month.

A three-year starter at Texas, Babers notched 131 tackles, five picks, four sacks, three forced fumbles and 48 passes defensed with the Longhorns.

In other news, Bucs kicker Todd France, who was allocated to NFL Europe to play with the Hamburg Sea Devils, tied two all-time NFLEL records on Sunday by drilling 5-of-6 field goal attempts during a 24-23 loss to the Cologne Centurions.

France, who will compete with Matt Bryant and Jay Taylor for the kicking job in Tampa Bay, connected from 54, 30, 38, 26 and 48 yards out. His only miss was a 46-yarder.

Tampa Bay quarterback Akili Smith, who signed a two-year contract in February, competed 6-of-11 passes (54.5 percent) for 68 yards and tossed a touchdown and a interception en route Frankfurt's 30-7 loss to Berlin.
