While the Darelle Revis trade sweepstakes continues on – with the Tampa Bay being a major player – the Buccaneers aren’t wasting any time attempting to shore up the secondary in other ways.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that 49ers free agent safety Dashon Golden will visit the Buccaneers first. Tampa Bay is hoping to not allow him to leave without having his name signed on the bottom line of a new contract.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, Goldson's agent Ben Dogra said the Buccaneers have sent a private plane to bring Goldson to Tampa for a visit and to get a contract worked out.
The potential addition of Goldson, a Pro Bowler over the last two seasons, would bring another physical presence (along with second-year strong safety Mark Barron) to the Bucs secondary. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound former Washington Huskie star is 28 years old and is regarded to be the most coveted safety in this season's free agent class. Goldson is a ballhawk, forcing 19 turnovers in the last four years (14 INTs, five forced fumbles).
Tampa Bay has faced Goldson twice in the previous three seasons and saw firsthand the impact he can make. In a 21-0 win at San Francisco in 2010, Goldson had seven tackles in the loss. A year later, the Niners destroyed the Buccaneers, 48-3, and Goldson notched four tackles and a forced fumble, separating Tampa Bay receiver Mike Williams from the football in the first half.
Tampa Bay has acknowledged they would like veteran safety Ronde Barber back for another season and have offered him time to make a decision. Some are speculating that the interest and potential signing of Goldson would signal the end of the Barber era in Tampa Bay, but that may not be the case.
The Buccaneers played a lot of dime defense in 2012, featuring three safeties in Barber, Barron and Ahmad Black. Tampa Bay could conceivably have Barber, Goldson and Barron on the field at the same time in 2013.
The 49ers placed the franchise tag on Goldson in 2012, but did not do so this offseason. During his six-year NFL career, Goldson has recorded 346 tackles, 14 interceptions, three sacks, and 39 passes defensed since being drafted in the fourth round by the 49ers in 2007.
