The Bucs have added another defensive player signing former Saints linebacker Jonathan Casillas Wednesday evening. The former Badger can play both weakside and strongside linebacker.
PewterReport.com can confirm the Tampa Bay has added depth to their linebacking corps signing former Saints linebacker Jonathan Casillas on Wednesday evening.

Casillas was an undrafted free agent from Wisconsin in 2009 and part of the Saints Super Bowl win over the Colts that year.  Casillas suffered a foot injury costing him the entire 2010 season but recovered well, and in 2011 the former Badger had his best NFL season, playing in 13 games with five starts and notching 43 tackles and three sacks.

According to sources Casillas can play both weakside and strongside linebacker and also excels on special teams. Tampa Bay has a need at SAM linebacker with veteran Quincy Black still not recovered from a 2012 shoulder injury that caused nerve damage. There is speculation that the Bucs and Black will reach an injury settlement. Black had surgery in late January to try and recover the mobility lost due to the injury.

Casillas most likely will compete for Black’s position along with Najee Goode, Jacob Cutrera, Adam Hayward and Dekoda Watson.

Terms of the deal have not been officially announced, but is thought to be a one-year deal that could be worth up to $3 million.

$3 million for a possible backup, at best? Ouch!

Good to have a speedy special teams player and backup LB. I wiould like to see Goode win the SAM LB position. If not that, bring in the Gator MLB in the draft and move our MLB over to SAM. After all the OLB position is what he excelled at in college, and David is calling the Defensive plays anyway.

Another good pick up. I believe Cox is gone and didn't Grimes stay with Atlanta ? Waiting on the deal to come through with Revis is hurting us to get a good CB. Move on , they want to much for Revis. They can't pay him so wait them out till Fri. and then move on !

Any news on Michael Bennet, Roy Millert or other CBs we could fly in?

LOVE both of our FA acquisitions today! Now go out and get Grimes and Cox and start making some magic on D again! This would put us in great position to nab the best player available in the draft.

@MarkCook do you guys have any updates about whom the Bucs are pusuing in FA at this point???

I like this addition, I don't think we need to draft an OLB either, we have some good young players that can compete for the opening left by Black. We should still sign a corner that's out on the market, don't have to have Revis and I DON'T want Sean Smith.

I remember Sean Payton bragging about how he's got so many interesting players(no doubt); one of the players I didn't know when looking over his roster a few years ago was Casillas. Sounds like a great addition. Sorry for Quincy Black.

i like this a lot...love having good special team players and solid depth at LB

I remember Casillas, he was the fastest LB in the 2009 scouting combine, 4.4 something.
