PewterReport.com can confirm the Tampa Bay has added depth to their linebacking corps signing former Saints linebacker Jonathan Casillas on Wednesday evening.
Casillas was an undrafted free agent from Wisconsin in 2009 and part of the Saints Super Bowl win over the Colts that year. Casillas suffered a foot injury costing him the entire 2010 season but recovered well, and in 2011 the former Badger had his best NFL season, playing in 13 games with five starts and notching 43 tackles and three sacks.
According to sources Casillas can play both weakside and strongside linebacker and also excels on special teams. Tampa Bay has a need at SAM linebacker with veteran Quincy Black still not recovered from a 2012 shoulder injury that caused nerve damage. There is speculation that the Bucs and Black will reach an injury settlement. Black had surgery in late January to try and recover the mobility lost due to the injury.
Casillas most likely will compete for Black’s position along with Najee Goode, Jacob Cutrera, Adam Hayward and Dekoda Watson.
Terms of the deal have not been officially announced, but is thought to be a one-year deal that could be worth up to $3 million.
