Many have wondered why the Buccaneers have not moved on securing one of the coveted free agent cornerbacks available since Tuesday afternoon. Talented players like Dominique Cromartie-Rodgers and Derek Cox have already found new homes. But according to reports it may be because they want a specific cornerback who is still under contract – the Jets Darrelle Revis.
While the infatuation with Revis isn’t new, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports did report some new news in regards to the potential trade, saying Wednesday that a deal is hinging now on the compensation.
Cole wrote late Wednesday night, “Tampa Bay Buccaneers management, all the way up to the Glazer family that owns the team, is fully on board with trading for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, multiple sources told Yahoo! Sports on Wednesday. That includes paying Revis what is considered an acceptable salary.
“The hold up, for now, is what the Jets are willing to accept in a trade. The Buccaneers don't want to relinquish their first-round pick in next month's NFL draft. Tampa Bay holds the No. 13 overall pick.”
Cole went on later to write that sources said the Buccaneers could possibly be persuaded to trade their 2014 No. 1 selection, figuring with their hopeful improvement in 2013, the selection would not be as high as this year’s pick.
The Jets have until this weekend to trade Revis before a $1 million bonus is due. But a source told ESPN’s Rich Cimini that the bonus wouldn’t force the Jets hand.
"One million is a pittance in the big picture when you're talking about a player of Revis' stature and the compensation he could bring," a league source said. "Don't be foolish with something like that."
According to ESPN Revis' agents haven't received permission to negotiate a deal with the Bucs, however one source speculated the parameters of a new contract are already in place.
The Buccaneers began addressing their need for secondary improvement on Wednesday agreeing to a five-year, $41.25 million contract with former 49ers safety Dashon Goldson.
During Goldson’s introductory press conference at One Buccaneer Place Wednesday, Bucs general manager Mark Dominik was asked about Revis and carefully chose his words.
"In terms of our football team we don’t stop,” Dominik said. “We are going to continue to look in any way that we can to continue to improve our football team. But today is about Dashon. Today is about his day being a member of our football team about him putting on our jersey. Just know that coach, myself, the front office, we are still all looking. The Glazer family will continue to provide us resources and lets us continue to look to see if there is anything that we think is rare, unique or a player that we think can help our football team we will continue to do that.
“I’m excited about Dashon, I’m excited about the next five years, I’m really excited about him being teamed up with Mark Barron in our secondary and really improve in making us a more physical football team like coach said that we were when we won a championship.”
With the free agent cornerback market beginning to thin out the Buccaneers need to either make a deal or walk away, or run the risk of being forced to start the season with at least one rookie cornerback on the field. The addition of Revis would free up the Bucs front office to more draft options come April, while also putting one of best cornerbacks in the league in Pewter and Red next September.
