This year’s free agency period has been a bit anti-climatic for Bucs fans. After last season’s first 24-hour splash with the signings of Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, and Eric Wright fans were expecting – or at least hoping – for a replay. But instead Bucs fans are like kids on Christmas Eve waiting for the clock to change to midnight, but instead has dead batteries.

Things finally changed on Wednesday with the announced deal with Dashon Goldson who signed a five-year $41.25 million deal.

And while not a big splash the Buccaneers did pick up some linebacker depth with the signing of former Saints linebacker Jonathan Casillas late Wednesday evening. Casillas can play both strongside and weakside and is also a efficient special teams player.

According to sources and reports the Bucs are hard at work with multiple agents continuing to try and recruit talent to Tampa Bay.

Below is a rundown of the latest rumblings, rumors and facts on the Buccaneers free agency situation.

• The likelihood of a Revis trade to Tampa Bay gets stronger by the hour as a number of top free agent cornerbacks are now off the table. Talented corners like Dominique Cromartie-Rodgers, Sean Smith and Derek Cox have all been signed to new deals and are no longer an option for the Bucs. Tampa Bay has interest in Brent Grimes and Pittsburgh’s Keenan Lewis, but both could be signed at any minute taking more options off the table. A possible wildcard in the Bucs cornerback hunts is Nnamdi Asomugha who was released by the Eagles on Tuesday. Asomugha has drawn interest from San Diego and New Orleans. Tampa Bay was interested in Asomugha in 2011 prior to the former Raider signing a monster deal with the Eagles.

• As we reported on Wednesday, former Seahawks Pro Bowl kick returner Leon Washington told Sirius XM NFL Radio that the Buccaneers were interested in trading for him prior to being released. Washington holds the NFL record for most career kickoff return touchdowns with eight, and would bolster the Bucs sluggish return game if signed. Tampa Bay went through numerous kick returners (Arrelious Benn, LeQuan Lewis, Michael Smith) in 2012, with little success. Washington most likely would also be Tampa Bay’s punt returner as Roscoe Parrish is a free agent and there in no indication he will be brought back. Washington reportedly is visiting New England first.

• Michael Bennett told ProFootballTalk.com late Tuesday that the odds of returning to Tampa Bay is 20-40 percent at best. The market was somewhat established early on Tuesday with former Raven defensive end/linebacker Paul Kruger getting a five-year $40-million deal ($8 million avg.) with the Cleveland Browns. Bennett is reportedly scheduled to visit Miami this week. Lions free agent Cliff Avril gambled last season with the Lions, turning down a three-year, $30 million deal, instead taking the franchise tag for one season. But Avril found the free agent market to be softer than expected and ended up taking a two-year, $15 million contract with Seattle on Wednesday. With the defensive end money not as high as expected, the Bucs and Bennett could potentially agree to terms on a more team-friendly contract.

• The backup quarterback situation became more this week with reports that Tampa Bay inquired about trading for Patriots backup Ryan Mallett or the Chiefs Matt Cassel. Mallett is in the final year of his contract but the asking price would most likely be no less than a third-round pick. Cassel seems like a more reasonable possibility as the Chiefs released the former Patriots and Chiefs starter on Wednesday. Cassel became expendable with the acquisition of former 49ers QB Alex Smith and the free agent signing of Drew Stanton. Former Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was released by Buffalo Tuesday, and Tampa Bay may consider giving the former Harvard grad a look.

• A source told PewterReport.com that the Buccaneers and restricted free agent linebacker Jacob Cutrera have reached a one-year deal just for over the veteran minimum.
