Poll many Bucs fans and the news that cornerback E.J. Biggers signed a free agent deal with the Washington Redskins on Wednesday won’t create too much anxiety.
But looking over Tampa Bay’s rostered defensive backs, the loss may hurt the team more than many may think. While Biggers had his deficiencies, some of the independent scouting services rated him as Tampa Bay’s best cornerback in 2012. The loss gives general manager Mark Dominik and head coach Greg Schiano one more hole that must be filled, from a unit that was the league’s worst last season against the pass.
As of Wednesday the Bucs cornerbacks are Keith Tandy, Anthony Gaitor, Leonard Johnson, Danny Gorrer, James Rogers, and Eric Wright. And there is no guarantee that Wright remains a Buccaneer, although with the lack of movement by Tampa Bay in free agency, combined with the Darrelle Revis trade talks stalling somewhat, the Bucs could be forced to try and work out a deal to bring Wright back at a reduced salary.
Biggers started 12 games in 2012 and finished the year with 51 tackles, one interception, a forced fumble and seven passes defensed. The former Western Michigan product was originally drafted by the Buccaneers in 2009 but a shoulder injury forced him to injured reserve his rookie season. In 2010 Biggers appeared in 16 games, mostly as a reserv,e playing in nickel and dime situations. In 2011 Biggers again played in all 16 games, starting the year as the Bucs primary nickle corner but also starting six games in relief of Aqib Talib who struggled with a hamstring injury.
Biggers will be reunited with former secondary and head coach Raheem Morris who now coaches the defensive backs for the Redskins. Biggers will also noticed some other familiar faces in the Redskins locker room as Jeremy Trueblood, Devin Holland, Dez Briscoe and Kai Forbath are all former Bucs who are now on Washington’s roster.
