Buccaneers DE Da'Quan Bowers avoided a jail sentence on Thursday when his gun charge in New York were reduced from felonies and misdemeanors to a disorderly conduct violation. Bowers, who is expected to replace Michael Bennett as a starter at left end this season, was fined $370.
Several people inside One Buccaneer Place are breathing a huge sigh of relief today, but maybe none more than Da’Quan Bowers himself, after the Queens County District Attorney’s Office agreed to reduce Bowers felony gun possession charge to disorderly conduct.
The Tampa Tribune’s Roy Cummings reported Thursday morning that according to his attorney, Dennis Coppin, Bowers was fined $250 with a $120 surcharge.
The Bucs starting left defensive end was facing the possibility of 3.5 years in prison stemming from his arrest last February after Bowers was arrested for carrying a handgun in New York’s LaGuardia Airport. On the afternoon of February 19 Bowers arrived at an airline check-in counter with a .40 caliber firearm in his luggage. Bowers alerted the authorities before boarding the jet, and his admission of the error is thought to be a big part of why the charges were reduced.
According to general manager Dominik, Bowers’ girlfriend surprised him with the trip to New York and he did not realize the gun was in the bag he packed as the couple packed for their trip to New York. Bowers said he realized only after arriving in New York that he was in possession of the firearm, which is legally registered in his name but not in the state of New York.
Bowers, 22, was released from a New York jail after posting a $10,000 bond following his arrest, and was facing two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
Bowers retained defense attorney Dennis Coppin who in a statement to the Tampa Tribune shortly after his arrest said Bowers will be "fully exonerated'' of all charges pending a fair investigation of facts of all charges.
PewterReport.com attempted to get a statement from Coppin, but his office said he would not be available until after 2 p.m. The Buccaneers also have not released a statement as of yet, but may before the end of the day.
PewterReport.com will update the story as more details become known.
