With a roster cut deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. the Buccaneers began their cuts early announcing on Monday seven players released or waived and two players put on injured reserve.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers began the tough cut down process a day early, announcing Monday afternoon they have the have waived former USF and Browns wide receiver Carlton Mitchell, defensive end Ernest Owusu, quarterback Adam Weber former Seminole defensive end Markus White, and released wide receiver Derek Hagan, fullback Spencer Larsen and safety Troy Nolan.

Tampa Bay also announced they have placed cornerback Anthony Gaitor (torn ACL) and running back Michael Smith (torn ligament – foot) on injured reserve and signed tight end Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan (6-4, 241) comes to Tampa Bay after having spent training camp with the New York Jets. A North Huntingdon, Pa. native, Shanahan played collegiately at the University of Pittsburgh. He entered the NFL this season as a college free agent.

All NFL teams had until 4 p.m. Tuesday to get down to 75 players and all teams must be down to 53 players by August 31 at 6 p.m.

WELL THE TOUGH CUTS TIMES ARE COMING TO 53 PLAYERS ONLY. I FEEL THAT TWO QB'S WILL BE CORRECT. THE YOUNG QB THAT TAMPA DRAFTED WILL BE SUITEABLE. AND A THIRD FORMER QB THAT PLAYS ANOTHER POSITION. EXAMPLE FORMER COLTS GREAT MACKEY WAS A GREAT FIT BACK IN THE 60'S. I HOPE THAT THE ROOKIES THAT WAS THROUGH ROUND 5 SHOULD BE KEPT. GO BUCS

They only reason they picked up the tight end from the "JETS" is because he came give them some insight into what there offense is about and potentially their gameplan for the 1st regular season game. Are we that worried?

Well its that time of the year. Its good that tampa picked up another TE.I hope he sticks with the team-go bucs

I wonder if TE Mike Shanahan has a shot to make the roster or if he's just a mole from the Jets. Spill your guts Mike! Will it be Geno or Mark?

No big surprises. I only dread hearing more panting wails for Demps on the boards. LOL I think Page has look good so far BTW and we have no room at RB IF you haven't noticed. Thanks Mark, keep up the good work.

Smith wasn't a punt returner, and we have good options at running back. Nothing fancy, but Page has caught every punt cleanly, and picks up positive yardage. Most kick offs aren't returned anymore, but again Page has managed to get past the 20 each time he's taken it out. I think he's done a fine job so far, and no Demps on the horizon.

I agree with you, Pinkstobk, on hating to see Smith put on IR. I also think he is better than Page, and I don't think Page will be that durable either. If you go back to my initial reaction to the selection of Gaitor, I did not think he was that good. When you compare him to the DBs we have now, Gaitor doesn't measure up to them either. I know size isn't everything, but there are big WRs in our division. It was great to see our second round DB with his wide wingspan knock away a good throw in the end zone by Miami and force them to kick a field goal. I don't think Gaitor, when healthy, would be able to make that play. I don't think we will miss any of these cuts either.

Is this the best they can due is sign a player that came to the NFL as a undrafted FA. Sounds like Wannstedt had some say in that pick up. There has to be better players going to be cut. We must be out of money.

They got one from University of Pittsburgh, so that's almost Rutgers.

I will always root for Rutgers South!...I mean the Bucs.

Evil Betty, I already knew that, I was more asking how many more players need to get cut for us to be at our 75 player max by tomorrow.

I was fully expecting to read that we signed a former Rutgers player among the moves today. I was pleasantly surprised.

I'm sorry for the guys that didn't make it. Hopefully they catch on somewhere else. Unfortunately I think this ends Gaitor's career. He hasn't looked good any time I seen him either at training camp or preseason. I also don't like hearing that M. Smith is on IR. He was our fastest RB and I liked him better as a KR than Page. Never has a team been so annually damned at the KR position than the Bucs.

    I agree.

    Some might say 75!

Where does this put us at as far as our roster is concerned? How many more cuts are needed?
