What did head coach Greg Schiano have to say about the possibility of guard Carl Nicks playing this week? What did Nicks himself say? How did former Gators running back Jeff Demps look in his first practice as a member of the Buccaneers? Get all these answers and more in the News To Know from Wednesday September 11.
Here is what you need to know about what happened at One Buccaneer Place on Wednesday, September 11:

PRACTICE CONDITIONS

• Practice began at 11:55 a.m. under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper-80’s at One Buccaneer Place. The players were in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets for the two-hour workout.

BUCS INJURIES

• TE Tom Crabtree and CB Michael Adams did not practice on Wednesday, and head coach Greg Schiano said today it will be a while before we see Adams back on the field.

“Mike had surgery today on his knee, so he’s going to be out for a bit. But he’ll back this season, he’ll be back sometime after the break, I’m not sure when exactly.”

• Fullback Eric Lorig also returned to practice on Wednesday and the Buccaneers – running back Doug Martin in particular – couldn’t be more pleased. Martin managed just 64 yards on 24 carries on Sunday against the Jets.

TAMPA BAY ROSTER MOVES
• The Buccaneers did not announce any roster moves on Wednesday.

THE BIG NEWS AT ONE BUC PLACE
• The Buccaneers finally welcomed running back Jeff Demps to the practice field on Wednesday and he made an impression on Schiano right away who described the former Florida Gator following the Bucs first practice with Demps.

“Fast,” Schiano said. “He made one run today, he reversed field and he outran the whole secondary, the whole team really. You can see he’s rusty, he hasn’t played football in a while. He looked excited, [he has] fresh legs.”

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was equally impressed with the Olympic sprinter.

“It’s a different kind of speed, but [running back] Jeff Demps’ speed is no joke,” McCoy said. “I don’t think it changed. He ran a play today on the scout team where I was like, ‘My goodness.’ You can’t get a better look than that for [Saints running back] Darren Sproles, because he turned the corner, and I think I was literally standing next to him, then he was like 40-yards downfield. I said, ‘Is that how fast he runs?’ So, he’s fast man. He’s fast. Everybody was like, ‘Wow’ – it was simultaneous – everybody out there was like, ‘Wow.’ He’s fast, man.”

• Carl Nicks practiced on Wednesday for the first time since contracting MRSA according to Schiano, it is possible Nicks may be able to go on Sunday.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen with [guard] Carl Nicks,” Schiano said. “He did some stuff today, you know, he’s limited, just playing it by ear, it going to be day by day. If he doesn’t go then it’s just like last week, there’s a group of guys could do it. Multiple guys got work at the position, [guard Gabe] Carimi right now is the guy if Carl doesn’t go, as of today. But we’re going look at it all week and make a decision.

“I’m not going to get into his private stuff medically but he’s doing well. So read into that what you may. He’s been out there doing some stuff like jogging and some other stuff. Today he was very limited, I don’t want you to get the wrong view but he was limited, he was out there doing some stuff.”

Nicks spoke during the opening locker room period and says he is ready to start playing football again.

"Do I have motivation to come back and play the Saints?  Sean Payton – haven't seen him in a while?  No, I've got nothing but respect for those guys.  I love the way they compete and that's how I got my competitive edge.  I'd love to play them but we'll see how it goes."

• The FedEx package from the NFL offices arrived at safety Dashon Goldson’s locker today as expected, and it wasn’t an early Christmas card from commissioner Roger Goodell. Instead a notice letting Goldson know his paycheck would be a little lighter soon after being flagged for a hit on a defenseless receiver against the Jets on Sunday.

Goldson talked about his “gift” from the NFL.

“The refs have a tough job, they got to call it like they see it," Goldson said. "But I got to play it, I got to play football. I play the game to win; I can't play timid. If I play timid, then it's a touchdown. I'm the last man of defense mostly.

"The game is tough as it is, and then you got to go ahead and think about what's a clean hit and what's a dirty hit. It is what it is, and we'll get to that when it's time for it."

BUCS QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I don't want to toot my own horn but I'm pretty strong.  I've just been trying to get [the foot] better, get it healed.  I've never had a problem [with] upper-body or lower-body strength. It's just getting it healed and then we can worry about football after that.  Now that it's healed, it's football."– Nicks on his recovery

TAMPA BAY’S NEXT PRACTICE
Tampa Bay will be back on the practice field Thursday at 11:45 a.m.

GOEastEndBoy -- Right you are! That was definitely a rant concerning our coach. Remember.. His mentor in Patriotsville is of the same mindset concerning giving away real information to opponents. The way coach Schiano answers questions, we tend to think he doesn't really know the answer. I write these comments with the required weekly injury report in mind. For the most part, that report is a joke. For example: how often is a particular player listed as not able to practice all week and BINGO there he is at game time lining up at his starting position. About Goldson -- I share his attitude about smacking a guy who comes into my area to gain even an inch. I would cold cock the guy too. Keep it up dude.. This isn't your mothers backyard badminton tournament. GO BUCS!!!

It wasn't that long ago that Schiano was making some disrespectful comments about Demps. He has done a 180 after seeing him run though. Now we have the chance to break run back records for the Bucs and Demps can go all the way on any play. The Bucs also need to be using him just like the Saints use Sproles. Now if Schiano gets Demps old teammate, Tebo, he won't have to worry about Freeman anymore because he will be able to replace Freeman and still make the playoffs and save his job! The Glazers will like having a full stadium every week too! I am very sorry to hear Schiano will play Carimi again at guard if Nix does not play. Freeman better be ready to be flattened again on pass plays if Carimi is left in there.

Was in no way disrespectful. He said the couldn't worry about a player that wasn't in camp. You misunderstood completely and misrepresented what Schiano's originally said to suit post.

Morgan I hope you have a good job because your comments on football are weak as puppy piss.Gholdson did his job and did it well.Shiano is right on when he said, hitting like that hasnt been seen around here since the heady defensive days of LYNCH,BROOKS,SAPP,RICE,BARBER,QUERLES,JACKSON,SPIRES,SINGLETON,ABRAHAM,KELLY,CULLPEPPER GOD BLESS THEM ALL.Hope I didnt leave anyone out.

I, too, liked this column. That's real "BUC" info that I can use. Good job Mark. What is the actual process at practice, in terms of media access? Can you talk to players before practice, or after practice, does Coach give a daily address. Can any reporter ask a question? Do you ask questions or just record what you witness and hear? Just wondering a bit about the practices, as I have never been to one. Keep up the good work. Oh yea, I know you mentioned that Demps ran some scout team, did he ever line up at RB? Practice receiving punts or kicks? Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the compliments. Here is the rundown of practice. We are escorted onto the practice field as practice starts by a Bucs PR person and we stand or sit on the patio area and are allowed just 30 minutes to view practice once the regular season begins. After our viewing time is over we go back in the media center where we start prepping our daily stories while practice continues. After two hours we are notified practice is over and we go in the media studio and wait for Schiano. Yes any reporter can ask a question. There is no order, it is just who can sneak one in before the next reporters starts his. After Schiano we get Sullivan on Wednesday, Sheridan and Freeman on Thursdays. We also have conference calls with the opposing teams coach and one player on Wednesday. After that we head to the locker room where we have 45 minutes to interview players. Not all players are in there at once, some want to talk, others don't. So we pick and choose and try and gather as much info as we can. All we saw Demps do today was warm up and work on special teams tackling drills and a few RB individual drills. We didnt see him fielding punts or kickoffs today.

Where is Brent Grimes !!! I think the Bucs are down to Johnson, Banks and Revis, Dom Injuries happen every year, You R an Absolute Idiot. I didn't think it would happen this fast but here we are ,Dom was a FOOL and I mean a FOOL to think that Revis was the only need at corner in FA.Yes he let numerous cheap quality FA corners go elsewhere(,as an NFL executive said a while back( I just don't know what the Bucs were thinking letting quality players at the position of tremendous need for them go elsewhere as it seemed they were overcome with Revis). The talent on this team will struggle to be seen due to some of the tremendous weaknesses/depth that just didn't have to be.The Bucs are like a Pretty good Army with some of the best Equipment and Guns but some Fool doesn't think they need reserve ammo because they have good guns.Dom does a great job with contracts but I think he really doesn't understand the GM position, he clearly doesn't !! A chain is only as strong as its weakest link and Dom has left this team with some really weak links ,all of his choosing!!

Thanks Mark - but can I make one request of all the media...please don't ever ask Schiano another question...I already know his answer to every one "I don't know...we'll see...maybe, maybe not....it's a thing....he's good, not good so much as not bad anyway....not sure what I'll do....we'll have some stuff for them....we'll probably run and pass but we might pass and run....things look good, well there's still stuff to work on so not great but good-ish....and on and on and on". I get the whole loose lips sink ships thing, but I can't read any more of his comments, at least the players and Dom say something when you guys ask....sorry for the rant.

Sorry, Dashon. Not your fault you work for a corrupt oligarchy.
  • avatar

Yeah he's the victim - if he keeps it up we'll keep getting penalized. Keep extending opponent drives. Keep our defense on the field . Keep losing like we did to an inferior team...

Mark, without doubt this feature is the best day to day Buccaneer news available. Seriously man, I love this format. I'm both surprised and encouraged by Nick's possible return so soon and also have to admit that despite my skepticism, the kind of speed Jeff Demps offers sounds very exciting. Thanks and a hat tip Mark, keep it up!
