Bucs Throwback Theme Has Been Canceled

Via the Buccaneers Communications Department:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers today announced an adjustment to the game theme for the Sept. 29 home game against the Arizona Cardinals. This change will ensure compliance with a new league policy that restricts the use of alternate player helmets. The league-wide guideline, which requires players to use the same helmet for all games during the season, was recently implemented based on the strong recommendation by the NFL’s Head, Neck and Spine Committee as well as the Player Safety Advisory Panel.

The change does not affect the team’s Hispanic Heritage celebration which has been scheduled as part of the NFL’s Hispanic Heritage Month festivities. Fans attending the game will be treated to special themed events and activities designed to celebrate the region’s strong Hispanic roots. Due to the new regulations, Buccaneer players will wear their standard pewter, red and white uniforms in place of the classic Florida orange, red and white throwback attire that had previously been scheduled.

“We are excited to celebrate and honor the Hispanic heritage that has had such a profound impact on our community,” said Buccaneers Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford. “While we regret that our players will not be able to don the ‘Bucco Bruce’ helmet and traditional orange, red and white uniforms, there simply was no acceptable way to meet the requirements of the new policy while staying true to the spirit of our throwback theme. We will continue to explore options with the league office for bringing back this fan favorite in future seasons.”

Shame. I liked the throwbacks. We seemed to play well in them.

If there is one team in the NFL that should never wear their throwback jerseys, it is the Bucs. No doubt the worst uniforms in history

Why the heck would we want to see "Bucco Bruce" again?

This is disappointing. Poor planning and communication by the team, and another casualty of the concussion lawsuits against the league.

I am quickly...QUICKLY... getting fed up with the NFL. I will always root for the Bucs, but I may change my allegiance full-time to NCAA and the Seminoles.

Clearwater Buc 21 - Except college isn't the same as the NFL. It's a completely different game. I don't like college at all as it's just not a product I enjoy watching. My wife loves college and doesn't watch the NFL. If you enjoy both don't give either up. Your a unicorn fan since most don't watch both!

Garv "...which requires players to use the same helmet for all games during the season..."

The throwbacks suck. Mostly bad memories and an overall unappealing scheme for a football uniform. Might look nice for an old ladies swimsuit, that's about it. Option for next year, I suggest, is as follows... Keep the helmet, and develop an alternate uniform top and pant that has an old-school feel to it... Say no stripes, and no logos... Just a red jersey with nothing but white numbers (black outline)... and non-shiny pewter pants with no stripes or maybe one simple black stripe... How cool would that look? It would be awesome!

Dude can you read? This is a league thing not a Buc thing! has nothing to do with being cheap....they must wear the SAME helmet all year! With fans like this no wonder it was quiet as a church at the game last week!

You don't think the Buccaneers knew about this some time ago? It just came up long after they sold the game as a throwback game? As for last Sunday, my throat is STILL raw! Sat through the rain and stayed until the end. It's what the long loyal fan base does. Sometimes we feel unappreciated and lied to, that's all. And yes, I can read rather well............... Dude

I never liked the throwback idea anyways. I'm thrilled at this news!

This is a shameless disgraceful and totally disrespectful way to treat season ticket holders and fans who have already bought tickets to this fun annual game. Too cheap to make new helmets safe enough and then they wait until less than two weeks before the game to tell us what they've obviously know for some time. This is not going over well and the blackouts will continue as long as the Buccaneers treat their fans like suckers.
