The Buccaneers are facing an uphill climb and each week it gets steeper and steeper. Many have come up with a certain way to salvage the season, and that way involves removing head coach Greg Schiano out of the equation.
At 0-5, the majority of the fan base will react the way Tampa Bay fans have since the start of the season. In fact, fans began questioning the coaching philosophy in the preseason. But after five straight losses, it has evolved into the creation of Facebook pages, message boards, and flooded phone lines at radio stations calling for the end of the Schiano regime.
Even with all that negativity surrounding him, Schiano remains positive.
“I can imagine how frustrated they are, absolutely,” Schiano said. “I can guarantee you that they’re not more frustrated than I am – no matter how fervent a fan they are. But that doesn’t make it OK. I understand we’re disappointing a lot of people.
“If they can hang in there, we’re going to be good. If they can’t, we’re still going to be good, and then they’re welcome back. I’m not being smart, I mean that. I think our fans are great. And when I came out to start the game, warm-ups, our fans were awesome. At the end of the game, I’m disappointed just like they are. I understand anything and everything.”
He says they are still going to be good. The question is, when? The fans have suffered through losing records in three of the last four seasons and the team is on pace to give the fans a fourth season of finishing below .500. But Schiano seems to just be taking into account his time spent with the team and not the previous years as he says there is no timeline on when things will get turned around.
“My philosophy is always do the very best you can and then go to bed at night with no regrets, and that’s what I do,” Schiano said. “I have no trouble falling asleep. Bust your rear end all day, doing it as hard and as smart as you can and then wake up and do it again the next day. That’s just been my philosophy, so I don’t put a timeline on it.”
While Schiano sleeps well, fans grow more and more restless of their team’s losing ways. Looking at the schedule, there may not be an end to the losing in sight based strictly on how the outcomes of the games have been from the first five games.
Perhaps sticking to his philosophy and not wavering from it is the cause of frustration across the Buccaneer fan base. Actually, by what you hear and read from them, that is part of their frustration and complaints. And if there is no timeline for when things get turned around, there may not be a fan base left that’ll get mad or excited for this team.
