The Buccaneers have placed wide receiver and special teams player Russell Shepard on injured reserve with a toe injury. Shepard becomes the 15th player to be placed on IR this year in Tampa Bay.

Shepard's toe injury occurred when he was attempting to take a handoff from Eric Page on a reverse on a kickoff return after San Francisco took a 23-14 lead with just minutes remaining in Sunday's game. Shepard lost his footing and fumbled the ball at the 2-yard line where 49ers running back Kendall Hunter recovered the ball and scooped and scored for San Francisco. That touchdown put the 49ers up 30-14 and essentially ended any hope of a comeback by the Buccaneers, who lost 33-14.

Prior to Sunday's gaffe, Shepard had been one of Tampa Bay's best special teams performers in 2013. The LSU product was second on the team with six tackles and a forced fumble on special teams, and also recovered a surprise onside kick against Atlanta earlier in the year.

Shepard did not have any catches this season, nor did he have any kick or punt return yardage in 2013.

Tampa Bay's injured reserve list now includes Shepard, running back Doug Martin, wide receiver Mike Williams, tight end Tom Crabtree, linebacker Jonathan Casillas, tight end Luke Stocker, tight end Nate Byham, cornerback Michael Adams, running back Mike James, running back Jeff Demps, cornerback Rashaan Melvin, cornerback Anthony Gaitor, linebacker Jacob Cutrera, running back Michael Smith and defensive end Marvin Booker.

The Buccaneers also have two players on the reserve/non-football injury list in kickers Connor Barth and Lawrence Tynes.

I thought Shepard's toe injury was from the one put up his *censored* by Dave Wandstat after he fumbled the ball.

    Scu- Thats hilarious, lol

@EastEndBoy: I'm sure Sciano & Dom will use the NUMBER of players on IR (& compare that number with ither teams) to justify keeping their jobs with the owners...and they won't go into detail with the owners as to the actual value of each player.

what I don't understand is, why is this a story...look at the list of guys on IR...apart from Martin (whose production has been largely replaced) and Williams (ditto), it's not exactly a bad IR list to have...I mean if at the beginning of the year you were told this was going to be our list of IR guys for 2013, I'm pretty sure we would all take it and count our lucky stars....

You guys took the Nicks to IR question right out of my mouth. Puzzling to say the least. Horse may be on the right track with a contract issue and the restructure made last year. This is the time of year when Dominik needs to be out there raiding practice squads looking for the best players available. You see what Miami did last week in the Pats game with CB Michael Thomas right off the 49er PS. I also read that we added "Touchdown" Tommy Streeter from the U to the PS. I don't know what his problem has been since being drafted in the 6th round by the Ravens, but he was terrific at Miami at 6-5, 4.3/40. Maybe we can turn him around!

Pinkstob - agreed. The whole "Nicks not on IR" thing is more than puzzling. Even if he was healthy enough for the next game, why would you play him? He is nowhere near in football shape. He basically hasn't played for two season - that would just be asking for another injury.

pinkstob; I think that Nicks contract might have to do with a bonus being paid based on how many games he could play in regardless if he is listed as inactive. It's the only reasonable thought I can gather as to why he wasn't put on IR many weeks ago.

So we put someone on IR due to a foot injury and it wasn't Nicks? Seriously, what good could possbily come from keeping Nicks off of IR. I don't take good special teams players lightly, so rest up Shepard and I hope you're ready in time for next year's offseason training.
