PewterReport.com has learned that Bucs' offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan will interview for the vacant head coaching position at Army on Friday in Tampa. The Bucs are currently last in the NFL in total offense after setting several franchise records in 2012.
Buccaneers offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan will interview for the open head coaching position at Army on Friday PewterReport.com has learned.

PewterReport.com can also confirm the interview will take place locally and not at the West Point Academy. The Buccaneers are practicing at One Buccaneer Place on Friday as they continue preparation for Sunday’s road trip to face the St. Louis Rams.

Army fired head coach Rich Ellerson who went 20-41 in his five seasons as head coach, including 0-5 against Navy. Ellerson led Army to its first bowl win since 1985 by beating SMU in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2010, but since then, Army has went 8-28.

Sullivan is a United State Military Academy at West Point grad, and coached four seasons as an assistant at Army.

Sullivan played defensive back at Army while completing his bachelor of science degree. He later earned his master’s from Humboldt State, and is also a graduate of the U.S. Army Airborne, Ranger and Air Assault schools.

The 2013 Buccaneers offense is currently ranked dead last in total offense averaging just 283.7, and in passing offense, producing an average of just 178.1 yards per game.

Last season was a different story however.

Sullivan made a major impact on the Buccaneer offense in his first year, as the team set franchise highs in points scored (389), total yards (5,820) and total touchdowns (44). The Bucs finished the season with the ninth-ranked offense in the league, the highest finish in franchise history.

From Weeks 6-9, the Bucs recorded four consecutive games with at least 400 yards of offense, including two games with more than 500 yards. That four-week performance marked the most yards in a four-game stretch in team history. The 513 yards put up in Week 7 against New Orleans were the most in a home game in team history and the third-most in team history.

Two weeks later, at Oakland, the team recorded 515 yards of offense, the second-highest single-game mark in franchise history. The team also managed to score at least 28 points in five straight games, the first time the Buccaneers had ever done so.

The Bucs finished with a 3,000- yard passer (QB Josh Freeman-4,065), a 1,000-yard rusher (RB Doug Martin-1,454) and a 1,000-yard receiver (WR Vincent Jackson-1,384) for the first time in franchise history.

Supporters of Sullivan point to a rash of injuries –which has some validity – as starters Carl Nicks, wide receiver Mike Williams and running back Doug Martin have been lost for the season to injured reserve. Other contributors like Tom Crabtree, Mike James and Jeff Demps have also been lost for the season. Add in the fact the Buccaneers are starting a third-round rookie quarterback and it is no surprise that the Buccaneers offense has struggled.

Critics point to unimaginative playcalling, a lack of development and of course the terrible offensive numbers.

Sullivan was a candidate for the Bears head coaching job last offseason before Chicago settled on Marc Trestman.

He signs with army. We get a new OC. Win-win for all.

Sullivan was a first time O.C. when Schiano hired him. At the time I thought he would've been better served with someone who had a successful track record. Much like when first time H.C. Dungy hired Shula. Big mistake by both. Weather Sully takes this job, or not, I think the Glazers will insist he be replaced, a long with Sheridan, that's if Schiano is retained. There will be alot of O.C.'s to pick from after black Monday including some former head coaches. The only way the fans can accept Schiano coming back would be to hire some coordinators with proven successful schemes. I believe Wanstadt will be O.K.with the Glazers, and Schiano on defense. The sticking point for Schiano might be the fact he won't have final say on his new O.C.. Where he might want to promote McNaulty, the Glazers will want a more experienced coach like a Norv Turner type. They will probably also insist he has complete say in what he runs.

I guarantee he takes the job if offered. He knows he might get fired after this year and it would look much better on his resume to take a head coaching gig prior to being terminated.

Bye, bye Sullivan. I want PR to do a look at Dri Archer!! This kid is SICK! 4.2/40 and would be unreal in a slot/Percy Harvin, Wes Welker type role! Absolute STEAL if we can get him in the later rounds!

Hope he gets it , he seems like a nice guy and I'm sure he wants to get fare away from schiano as possible

Looking pretty hard for an excuse counting Crabtree and Demps as they were not much help when they were on the field.

Seriously, I hope he gets it as he would be more suited to that kind of atmosphere. I believe college football is up his ally; same for Schiano.
