The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be unveiling their new uniforms on Wednesday, but decided to give the world a sneak peak on Monday with the release of a picture of running back Doug Martin in the new look. Despite the picture, the uniforms are actually dark pewter, not black.
Last month the Tampa Bay Buccaneers kept everyone in suspense for days with their updated logo design unveiling, eventually showcasing the new helmet and modified logo on the NFL Network in prime time. It was also announced that a new uniform design was coming on Wednesday, March 5.

But for the release of the new uniforms, this time the team couldn’t wait, and on Monday morning, revealed photos of their new look. For those thinking it would be just a tweak, they were wrong.

The new Bucs uniforms are a drastic change from the standard red and white jerseys worn since 1997. The Buccaneers team website revealed details on the uniform design.

The base uniform color has been energized with richer pewter, juxtaposed with a brighter, more vibrant shade of "Buccaneer Red". In homage to the Buccaneers' early uniforms, the look also features "Bay Orange" as a new primary trim color and accent on both the jersey and the pants. Tampa Bay also becomes the first NFL franchise to incorporate a revolutionary reflective chrome border around the numbers on the front, back and shoulders. The chrome border incorporates a technologically advanced reflective coating that adds a new dimension, increased readability and a unique glow to the numbers.

Custom name and number fonts feature beveled edges inspired by historical Buccaneer blade carvings, echoing the modern industrial design inspiration. The team's white jerseys sport pewter sleeves and shoulders with red numbers, while the red jerseys also feature pewter sleeves and shoulders but with white numbers on the body and red numbers on the shoulders-- adding an extra element of energy to the evolved Buccaneer identity.

The team's secondary logo, a powerful wooden ship fueled by wind-filled sails, is similarly refined to convey the Bucs' relentless energy. The redesigned wooden ship is positioned on the right shoulder and the abbreviated "BUCS" moniker on the left. The enhanced flag is proudly displayed on both the right and left hip of the pant.

Buccaneers co-chairman Edward Glazer commented on the new look.

"Today marks the culmination of more than two years of research and planning to bring the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into a new and exciting era of our history," Glazer said. "We worked closely with our partners at Nike to design a uniform that would set the standard for both design and functionality. The result is a sleek, modern design that honors our championship past while also establishing a new, bolder identity moving forward."

A previously scheduled press event on Wednesday, March 5, has been replaced in favor of an exclusive, Buccaneers Season Pass Members-only event featuring the first live viewing of the new uniforms. Further details will be provided at a later date according to Buccaneers.com. A photo gallery of high-resolution imagery and additional information regarding the team's new look will be released at 2:00 p.m. ET on both Buccaneers.com and Nikeinc.com.

Overall I don't think they are too bad with 2 major exceptions.....the number font is terrible and the worst part by far imo is the "bucs" patch on the sleeve. As a graphic designer it drives me crazy. I took an entire class while getting my degree that taught us not to design like this.....but hey they were designed by nike so what do you expect.
  • avatar

I been. A fan as long. As I remember and seeing this transformation to me its like looking into. The future. And the future is now this new uniforms signifies a new day for bucnation. This team is really on a collision course with success and what better way to kick off the new era of glory to come than with these wonderful jersey's. The remnants of the past present and what is yet to come is strategically rendered in this uniform for those that can't see the makings of this dynasty wake up and love the change
  • avatar

Helmet logo to big but like the uniform.
  • avatar

I won't buy one of these, they are god awful, but then my underwear don't hang out of the back of my pants either... I'm changing my hande back to Buctebow, I'm done with change and the turnaround.
  • avatar

PF flyers, try them on, run up, and down the isles of JC Penny's!! I'll take them mom, pay the four bucks, I'll wear them home.
  • avatar

Me, Scubog, and Horse seem to be O.K. with them, I actually like them. We're old school, but in our life's we've seen that nothing stays the same no matter how much we wish it would. Every team in the league will eventually be sporting this type of look, get use to it. I think our logo and helmets are the best looking in the league right now. The pants will show better on the field instead of the sweat spot old pewter. I like the ship on one sleeve, and BUCS on the other. That's who we are, why the word BUCS on the sleeve should upset some is beyond me. You can get a better look on the buc web site. Ugly, hate, strong words, they're not that bad, I think we might have the most up tight fans in the league.
  • avatar

Being old-school I learned a long time ago that people are always resistant to anything that disrupts their placid world...........even if the change is the latest trend. The change from Bucco Bruce to the new flag, skull and cross-swords was a welcome departure since the winking pirate had come to represent losing. But many complained. I must admit, I didn't expect this drastic a change; but perhaps we should have seen this coming with the newest Panthers, Broncos, Seahawks and many college team's breaking tradition to this more modern look. Right now, it doesn't look like our little team (kinda like a wife with a new hairdo and seeming a little "strange") ; but after we see this style in stores and most importantly see it on the field in triumph, even the most defiant will concede. One need only look at today's tennis shoes (that's what us baby-boomers call them) with the wild colors and styles. They sure don't resemble my old PF Flyers. Remember those? They made us run our fastest and jump our highest. Perhaps these new uniforms will do the same for the mighty modern Bucs.
  • avatar

As some have pointed out, this may be a "generational" thing (with some exceptions of course). I'm with the older group and just don't like the look - either the white or red unis. They don't say anything about Tampa, Florida, or the Bucs. They are just Nike's version of "futuristic" and, by extension, their version of cool. Since out now old red and pewter uniforms classify as "throwback" unis, is it possible to have a throwback game every week?
  • avatar

I HATE HATE HATE these new uniforms. They are fugly! I hope we change them after the 3 year limit.
  • avatar

don't know about these ones the only thing I know is that we will not look matching with the chrome and uniforms. helmet was great hoping uniforms were going to be as well guess that was not the case. I think if jerseys don't get a lot of sales we could see a new uniform with same helmet in about 4 years cant wait!
  • avatar

Ed Glazer & Co. got caught up in the shiny chrome facemasks and the glow in the dark numbers. If they would have run this by the fan base in a focus group, the Glazers and Nike would have heard loud and clear. Feels like someone designed this who had no previous history on the Bucs or the Tampa Bay area. Can't imagine the Glazers are happy with this response. No one wants to spend two years on a new look that has to "grow on you" in a certain light. I will always love the Bucs, but this was big miss with the fan base. Oh God what are they gonna do to the Swashbucklers??
  • avatar

I'm sorry but "Hell NO"! The dark pewter with the orange make them look like BROWNS colours. The "Bucs" on the sleeve is just silly. For the the love of GOD, they couldn't have saved this disaster until AFTER free agency? There goes the neighbourhood.... Glad I stocked up last year. Sorry fail......
  • avatar

Well I guess we traded in Orange for Red then traded in red for Black (call it dark pewter if you want)...maybe black is more Buccaneer-like....I think they're fine apart from the PAC-man numbers...who's the genius at Nike that thought those numbers looked good in any way....fire that guy!
  • avatar

The uniforms are fine; nothing wrong with change. Am I going to go out right away and buy the new style? Yeah, after all my t shirts, shirts, and jersey's are a couple years old or older.
  • avatar

now i could be wrong about this but it seems like most of the older generation of bucs fans really dislike the new uniforms and the younger generation (me) like them for the most part...just an observation ive had from reading comments on facebook about these uniforms...so that said, it makes sense to design the uniforms to appeal to the younger bucs fans..i think thats what they were going for anyways...
  • avatar

I bet when you buy one of these new jerseys it'll come with a paper bag absolutely horrible these new uniforms look like the belong in the arena league.
  • avatar

I think there GREAT! Just beautiful.
  • avatar

These are downright embarrassing!!! I thought we had one of the coolest unis in the NFL, and these clownsuits are hideous. Why!!?!! This screams desperation and flat out "tone deaf" and out of touch with real fans who buy merchandise. We had an identity and now I can see us changing every few years, because these SUCK. Its a sad day to be a Buc fan!!!
  • avatar

Oh well. It'll grow on the fans. Nothing a little winning won't cure. Everybody seems to have gotten past Seattles ugly azz uniforms!!
  • avatar

seattle has one of the best uniforms in the game!!
  • avatar

I have to say, as the owner of a design firm that if this is the result of 2 years of concepts to this final result than I question the design team. I am all about stepping outside the box, but I do not see at all where this new uniform is reflective of The Tampa Bay Buc's. Of course, this is just from my point of view as I am sure there are other's that love the new look. The look of the helmet reminds me of something Oregon Duck's would have came up with.
  • avatar

@donhorn, whats the name of your firm? i'd like to see some your work
  • avatar

All the people that say the uniforms will grow on them I ask you, have you ever been on a blind date where he or she shows up and your friend says that he or she will grow on you. IMO a dog by any other name is still a DOG.
  • avatar

KINDERRT, You can drink the dates pretty and you can do the same for the uniforms.
  • avatar

The best thing about tomorrow is that we're one day closer to the Bucs changing that ugly uniform design.
  • avatar

The old pants left dark sweat marks on them. The darker pewter pants with a dash of red, and orange look way better then the old. Our uni's looked to much like the 49er's. This look is unique to us. The logo, the helmet are way cooler then the old. So surferdudes weighs in with a big thumbs up.
  • avatar

If I owned a Buc's store I think I would sell it quick. You might convince a blind man to buy the new jersey but you would risk his seeing eye dog tearing you to bits. It is gosh awful! When the new pewter and red uniforms were revealed a long time ago I was thrilled. I am glad I have bought my gear from that era because I won't buy anything as degrading and disgusting as this new gear. The Glazers need to demand a refund from NIKE. Perhaps Lovie will like it because it may be dark enough to remind him of the black jerseys Chicago wears. But for me, I have no interest in looking any closer to the Raiders. This design has no appreciation for pirate gear! Whatever NIKE geek who came up with this never watched a Bucs game or came to Gasparilla. Teeny Boppers don't buy Buc Tickets either. However, if you had to come up with something to wear to a video game arcade, you should be able to buy lots of these uniforms on sale or find them in the dumsters when they don't sell.
  • avatar

They have a video posted up on Buccaneers.com with McCoy and Martin in motion with more natural lightning (at least some of the time) and they look much better. Seems like with the helmet and the uniforms they're not as dark as they are in still pictures, it's just Nike trying to be "kewl" and really making them look terrible - but in motion with better lighting and without some intern adjusting the contrast they come to life. I now have some hope but won't know for certain until I see them outside, the way they're meant to worn. But it does appear that image that PR used above is probably the worst image available.
  • avatar

This uniform looks like they couldn't make up their mind what color so they went rainbow. Only the this franchise could screw up a uniform change. I knew this was going to be BAD when they unveiled the helmet. We not only play bad on the field but now we will look bad on the field. McCoy's expression says it all. He looks like he would rather be somewhere else!
  • avatar

I love all you guys, but you know God put a group of PR posters together to design the horse and that's how we got the camel. Whoop! Whoop! what day is it? lol. And some of you guys know the longer you pay child support for an ugly kid, the more he starts to look like you! Right! Give it a little time, say when Vincent Jackson streaks across the goal line for our first TD of the season, they will look just great!
  • avatar

They are starting to grow on me... The Red Jersey's really look a lot better though. Havent seen an alternate Pant color yet though.
  • avatar

I for one, love the new unis! I only wish the numbers were a different font maybe like the Gruden yrs practice jersey
  • avatar

Yeah, these are pretty awful. I like the new helmet design is probably the only positive thing I can say. The numbering on the jersey's looks horrible, there are too many colors which is a problem a LOT of teams in a LOT of sports have been doing more recently AND the darker matte pewter is awful as well. In general the move to matte colors has also only worked for a few teams thus far. And this isn't one of them. *facepalm*.
  • avatar

One thing for certain is that uniform doesn't have anything to do with Tampa or Florida. Personally I would have went back to the old orange uniforms for a few seasons while a new design was created - so just as people started to get sick of the throwbacks we'd have something new ready that could last the next 15-years or so. I just don't know about these new uniforms yet. The red version looks better, but it still look too dark. HOWEVER assuming what they showed on NFL Network is indeed what our helmet looks like, perhaps the darks are not as dark as they appear here since on TV the helmet was a light shade of pewter, not a dark shade like the still pictures of the helmet show. So perhaps that is going on here.

I'm withholding final judgement for a few more days, but it's concerning as this is, at this point, in now way an improvement over what we had.

  • avatar

I, flat out, do NOT like the new uniforms. Nike (with the Glazer's blessing and help) have managed to make us look like a college team in the worst possible way. Two years of work and they've managed to produce a look similar to Oregon's unis just with a different color scheme. When will people realize that Nike's designs are way over-rated (in fact, most of their work just blows). There are bits of the uniforms that are O.K. But the total package is just not good. The pewter is too dark. If it looks too much like black then, for all intents and purposes, it's black. Let's see how much the players like it for those Sep - Oct games in Tampa. Oh well, as long as the team wins I can deal with just about any type of uniform.
  • avatar

    Hummm....

I really really liked the new helmet, I think it looks great.

    The uniforms... hummm...

I like that there is some orange in there, that's good.

    As for the rest... hummm...

Perhaps it will look better in motion. For example the helmet looked incredible on TV, but in the still pictures it didn't look nearly as great. Hopefully, I'm really really hoping, that's the case here.

The font is terrible, I don't want to be reminded of my alarm clock and having to wake up for work when I'm watching football.

  • avatar

He Hate Me!! XFL all the way...and it took 2 whole years to design this atrocity?! When I first saw them, I thought it was a joke; sadly no.
  • avatar

I am one of those people who thik chage and modernizing is always a must. I understand some of the old school fans and their wish to keep the classic together but i think and upgrade is a good thing. Everywhere else in the world people get with the times. While i respect the old school uni's and what they stood for did we ever win in those orange uni's? Im in the culinary wolrd where everything is modernizing and changing. Why cant we? We needed a new look and attitude anyway because lets face it, we werent impressing no one with al the others. One mans opiion. I like them.
  • avatar

@Tampajoey- GREAT! Now that I read your post about the A-TEAM van, that's all I can think of..it looks like a person who didn't grow up in the eighties designed the uniform to have a futuristic/1980s vibe to it- like much of today's young designers who are now currently influenced by Back to the Future and what not...should have watched Goonies and Raiders of the Lost Arc for inspiration..
  • avatar

The other pics are more promising but still seems off. The BUCS on the sleeve looks dumb- should have just rocked dual pirate ships or something..the numbers seem to be trying too hard to be different- the names on the back have a Star Trek feel to them which is again spacey, not pirate like...I always like the numbers we used on the practice jerseys of old- way more pirate like..
  • avatar

They look like football players in those unies. Gerald McCoy and Doug Martin look like they are in football shape right now!!
  • avatar

Think I need to wait and see the white unis but the red ones look better now that Ive seen those.
  • avatar

After seeing them on buccaneers.com I too have changed my mind a little they are not as bad as I originally thought, but still not better than what they have been so I still think its a fail for going backwards
  • avatar

I just saw all of the unis (home and away) in better light with McCoy and Martin as models at Buccaneer.com. Once we see them live, I think most opinions will change to liking them. My opinion, I would still prefer traditional numbers, but the more I see of them, the more I like them.
  • avatar

These uniforms are worse than the Maryland uniforms. Very disappointing, another reason not to go to the games
  • avatar

They should have waited two more days and got it right- this redesign is wrong on SO many levels??? we are the buccaneers- what do digital numbers and chrome masks have to do with that?should have stuck with more of the tattered pirate flag- tough and weathered, scary and ghostly..instead we get a polished turd- robo space pirates...not impressed..wish and hope this is a joke, knowing our team- it's the real deal..this redesign is sinking quickly-I guess it will take 15 years to fix this newest mistake..
  • avatar

I like these, and it'll take time just like the last uni change b4 everyone does, but my one criticism which is shared by the majority here it seems like, is the the numbers...they're going for a more "swashbuckling" look right?? so then why wouldn't you use the number scheme that looks like they were carved into the jerseys by a sword?? think the Ravens have the number scheme i'm talking about.
  • avatar

I just saw the photos of both home and away jerseys on the team website and the away Red jerseys look much better. However that being said, they need to change the numbers. They look absolutely ridiculous and bush league. Change the numbers and you probably won't see the harsh backlash, but too late now as Nike has already put the kids to work manufacturing these monstrosities to flood the market for April 1st.
  • avatar

I'm just glad my old, red Derrick Brooks jersey will never go out of style, because there is no way I'm ever buying one of these atrocities. Here's to hoping it doesn't take another 17 years before they change the jerseys again.
  • avatar

Like the helmet. I believe it will begin to grow on people. I like that they are trying to keep the present and the past together. Are these the away jerseys? or are these the home?
  • avatar

Freaking embarrassing! Looks like the A-Team's van had sex with a cheap digital alarm clock! They should have aborted that train wreck! Are the Bucs going to replace the pirate ship in the endzone with the A Team's van to match these ugly A-Team van inspired jerseys? Now when the Bucs score, instead of firing the cannons they can play the theme to the A Team. At least the A Team has a cool theme song. Haven't Bucs fans been through enough? What a joke!
  • avatar

It looks like the Bucs are trying to inform people that there has been a change to our heritage, that we are part Cherokee and part Chinese. They are using the new uniforms to make that statement, Ugh......Lee, I find myself having to head off to the ceramic bowl and begin ralphing!!!
  • avatar

In a word, hideous! It begs the question why? We had one of the best and most distinctive uniforms in the league. Maybe a little design modification/updating to our existing uniforms might have been acceptable, but this garish, tasteless, Micky Mouse outfit, gratuitously embellished with over-sized helmet logo, is bush league.
  • avatar

Bush league. When the Packers, Giants, Niners have a couple of bad years they don't suit their guys up in clown outfits just to make a change. They just get better. Really stupid new look.
  • avatar

Im still getting a Revis jersey but I sure hope it looks better in person, this puts my fandom to the test smh.
  • avatar

I've loved all of the jerseys we've had and I love that they went with drastic changes with these. It was time. Give them a chance. They are ground-breaking.
  • avatar

Think they'll look much better in person and on the field. Hear they're releasing more/better photos at 2:00 today. Personally like the change myself.
  • avatar

Helmets are great... A bigger bolder flag with a cooler looking skull that isn't so cartoonish and Crome grill? Awesome... Uniforms are Heart Breaking...
  • avatar

What the Hell is this? Is this the CFL or Arena League or yeah like someone said the XFL? Just when you wish you could build a tradition they go and put something so disgusting that you can't wait for them to change it again already... I mean... What were they thinking? Are they that ashamed of their past that they are trying so hard to get rid of tradition and can only hope to look into the future? I mean I can't blame them in terms of wins and loses but not with uniforms man... This sucks...
  • avatar

Dear God, these are awful. Did i wake up and become an Maryland Terp. fan? Jeeze, as if i didn't have enough to be depressed about today with Marty St. Louis blowing up the Lightning. Thanks, Glaziers. What a terrible decision.
  • avatar

The old Blitz video games called, they want their uniforms back. This is god-awful. Are we playing in Tron? We had the best uniforms in the league. Why trade them for this garbage? I will never be spending money to buy one, that's for sure. I'll be picking up a bunch of old red jerseys on clearance, and that'll be that.
  • avatar

On the fence with this. Definitely state of the art uniforms. I like they have black on gloves and shoes to emphasize uniform is dark pewter, not black. Although it may look black on the field from a distance. In that case I would prefer the lighter pewter. Wouldn't like getting confused with the dirty birds. Will wait to see how other pants and jersey combinations look before passing final judgment on the color scheme. BTW, Doesn't look like a chrome grill to me? Go BUCs.
  • avatar

I totally did not expect this far a departure from the old uniforms - which I absolutely loved from day one. I feel like I just fell into a bad sequel of TRON. Really hate the uniform.
  • avatar

Today, tradition died within the BUCS organization, however, I am sure high school students love the look. How many of them buy tickets to the games? Along with the Jaguars, these uniforms rate at the bottom of the NFL football food chain....only Oregon's uniforms are worse.
  • avatar

I love the new helmets. The new uniforms are truly disappointing. The "ugly is beautiful" philosophy should remain in hockey. May we have 16 throwback games a year.
  • avatar

On a scale of Booker Reese to Derrick Brooks the new uniform is about a Brad Johnson. Great? No, but has potential and is the right thing to be doing at this point in time.
  • avatar

That is honestly the worst professional uniform I've ever seen. Hope this is a prank.
  • avatar

Simply hideous, they look like Arena football unis. Worse than Seatlle's.
  • avatar

2 years of R&D and Nike comes up with this? I really didn't want to be disappointed, but Nike really didn't capture the essence of the Bucs with these unis. There were so many different ways you could of gone with the pirate imagery and lore. Really kinda bummed but they're my Bucs and I have to support them either way.
  • avatar

Hate is a strong word. Hate 'em! I decided I liked the helmets after a second look, but I tried that this time and I still hate 'em. I think I hate the orange more than the numbers, but I hate them both. With the creamsicle orange you have to go all out (like the old uniforms) or go home. The previous uniforms you had to look hard to find the orange. Now it's like a centralized color trying to draw attention to itself. Hopefully the red uniforms are tolerable. I was so looking forward to getting a new white jersey this year to replace my old orange Freeman jersey. I can't see spending $120 on that ugly @$$ $#!%. This is the first time I've got to give a thumbs down to the Glaziers. I usually agree with their moves.
  • avatar

Wow, When a "company man" like Pinkstob doesn't like a Bucs Move u know they are ugly, lol
  • avatar

I can agree on the number style, doesn't do much for me. On the whole, I kind of like them, I like getting some of the orange in there, and the darker pewter.
  • avatar

I like the new uni! The thing I like best is the word “New”. If they bring a new attitude along with it, they’ve succeeded. On my Mr. Blackwell fashion meter, I give it an 8. If they change the number to the traditional style and take out the orange accents, I’m at a strong 10! Go Bucs!
  • avatar

Much more drastic than I expected. Will take some time to get used to. Can't say that I hate them or love them, although they do look more suited to the XFL....Likely just another attempt to boost revenues by making fans have to buy the newest unis to stay current. But if this change makes them win more, I'm all for it.
  • avatar

I think some fans wil like the change in the uni's because some fans like anything the Bucs do they are "Yes" men, I for one think they stink and they don't even look like the Bucs anymore. We look like we joined the USFL or something, please bring back last yr's uni's before its to late or even the old creamsicle uni's
  • avatar

Disagree, definitely think the change is for the better. I think the new jerseys looks crisp and pretty sick. I think with Nike getting more exclusive contracts, these types of jerseys will start to become the norm. I know that the Broncos will have new jerseys and helmets after this season and will likely have a similar "futuristic" look. I don't think you can even compare with the Jaguars, the two colored helmet just looks so stupid, I think the Jags will have the worst unis in the league for a long time just on that. At the same time, I think we'll need to see what the away ones look like before we can make a full assessment.
  • avatar

respectfully disagree. They look pretty sick for sure. just not "Cool Sick", more vomit inducing sick. LED Alarm clock numbers scream "not even trying" to design a good look for these jerseys. I am also waiting to see the away jerseys, but even a cooler Red/Pewter combo won't save us from seeing these eye sores next season. Do away with the orange altogether. If you are moving on to the future, than get rid of the orange accents. They are not relevant any longer.
  • avatar

This change is a change for the worst. Worse than the Jaguars changes last year. Helmet is a good change, however the numbers and look of the new jersey is just so XFL ugly.
  • avatar

The best I can say is maybe they'll grow on me. They are very different, and my first impression is that they haven't improved anything. I'm underwhelmed.
