The Buccaneers added some firepower to the tight end position in free agency, landing Brandon Myers of the New York Giants with a two-year, $4.25 million contract. Myers will compete with Tim Wright and Tom Crabtree for the right to start in 2014.
One of the first salvos fired by the Buccaneers in free agency was signing New York Giants tight end Brandon Myers, who inked a two-year, $4.25-million deal. The contract includes $2 million worth of guaranteed money, likely the first year's base salary. Myers, 28, will compete with Tim Wright and Tom Crabtree for the right to start in Tampa Bay to help the league's worst-ranked offense.

The 6-foot-3, 256-pound Myers caught 47 passes for 522 yards and four touchdowns last season with the Giants after signing a one-year deal. The Iowa product, who is known for his receiving ability, spent his first four seasons in Oakland where he had a breakout year in 2012 with 79 catches for 806 yards and four touchdowns.

Wright came out of nowhere to catch 54 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns and was one of the most productive rookie tight ends in the NFL in 2013. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Wright needs to add some bulk to help his in-line blocking in 2014.

Crabtree was signed last offseason to compete for the starting position, but a high ankle sprain in the preseason sidelined him for the first four weeks of the season before a triceps injury ended his 2013 campaign in December. Crabtree caught just four passes for 21 yards and one touchdown and performed better as a blocker than a receiver.

The injury-prone Luke Stocker is also on the Bucs' roster at tight end, and has been a disappointment since his rookie season despite managing to stay healthy in 2012 and catch 16 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown. He’s entering a contract year and will likely get the 2014 training camp to show he can make the roster and contribute as a backup.

During the offseason, the Bucs also added 6-foot-7, 280-pound Steve Maneri, who last played for Kansas City and has six catches for 52 yards in his three-year NFL career.

Welcome aboard Brandon Myers! Think of the offense now...2 TE sets with Myers and Wright plus Vincent Jackson, Mike Williams, and Doug Martin. We need another WR and we are in good shape on O.

Lots of OTs and Guards available. With the draft being deep in OL the FA market may be a bit soft, which only helps us. Sign a guard and draft an OT.

What happened to the Collins signing ? Hope something didn't happen like backing out .

A receiving TE is a QB friendly move. I like the DT and DE DLine rebuild. Show me more. Let me see that OLine get a shot of energy. I like the move, but I also understand our #1 & #2 TE are just big slow WO's. They don't block at the line. We need some beef at OLine. Good start to the new League Year.

So we got the equivalent of Tim Wright?, Great move guys, smh!

Finally, a pro TE. We'll take him!

Kinderrt , The bucs have right around maybe even slightly more than 50 mil in cap room if everything goes as I think it will , prob only spent about 8.5 so far, 10 at the most.Expect another 25 mil in Free Agents Targeted.

I like what Licht is doing so far in terms of signing FA's. I read he also signed a DT from the Seahawks that I'll comment more one when PR posts the story. I commented in the FA TE story that PR created that I didn't like any of the TE's and I don't, but I do think Myers is the best fit for the Bucs of the bunch. What I like is that it's only a 2 year contract at a cheap rate, which leaves the door open for the Bucs to draft a TE high in the draft and become the #1 TE of the future. If that happens we can easily keep 4 TE's or cut Crabtree depending on how he develops. Stocker isn't making the team either way. Go Bucs!

We are spending like a drunken sailor. Will we have money for a QB and a couple of CB's and more OL help?
