With Pro Bowl cornerback Darrelle Revis likely traded or released by Tampa Bay on Wednesday, the Buccaneers found his replacement with the acquisition of Tennessee CB Alterraun Verner. The Pro Bowl defensive back signed a four-year, $26.5-million contract with the Bucs.
After signing Cincinnati defensive end Michael Johnson, NY Giants tight end Brandon Myers and Seattle defensive tackle Clinton McDonald on the opening day of free agency, the Bucs kept the action going on the first day of the 2014 free agency season by signing Tennessee CB Alterraun Verner to a four-year, $26.5-million contract late Tuesday night.

Verner was signed to replace cornerback Darrelle Revis, who will be traded or released by 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday so that Tampa Bay will avoid paying him $3 million in roster bonus and workout money, in addition to keeping its 2014 third-round pick as part of last year's trade with New York that allowed the Bucs to acquire Revis. The Pro Bowler is slated to make $16 million in base salary in 2014.

Aside from sending the team's 2013 first-round pick to New York, the Bucs are obligated to send a conditional pick – either a third- or a fourth-rounder – to the Jets this year. If Revis is on the Bucs' roster by the third day of the 2014 league year, which is Thursday, the pick is a third-rounder. If Revis is gone by Thursday, it's a fourth-rounder.

Verner, a former fourth-round pick out of UCLA by Tennessee, is a perfect fit for Lovie Smith's Cover 2 defense and also has some man coverage ability. He's coming off a career-high five interceptions in 2013 and has 11 picks in his four-year career. Verner has also recovered five fumbles and forced two fumbles, which shows he has a nose for the football.

Verner is a great tackling cornerback in run support and made his first Pro Bowl in 2013. At age 25 he was one of the most sought-after free agent cornerbacks on the market.

The Bucs could be in for a flurry of activity again on Wednesday as the team is entertaining visits from Chicago QB Josh McCown, Cincinnati OT Anthony Collins, Green Bay C Evan Dietrich-Smith and Chicago CB Charles Tillman.

Despite the acquisition of Verner, the team will look to acquire another cornerback in free agency, probably Tillman, who played for Smith in Chicago. In addition to Verner, the Buccaneers also have Johnthan Banks, Leonard Johnson, Danny Gorrer, Marc Anthony, D.J. Moore, Anthony Gaitor, Rashaan Melvin, Deveron Carr and Revis – at least for the time being – at the cornerback position.

This George Hicks again from East Texas-All you so call Tampa Bay Fans why don't all the negative fans get on board to see what Tampa does with all these new players and look forward to 2014 draft. What would be a topping on the cake is at no#10 DT ANTHONY IS STILL THERE FROM PITTSBURG I believe that He could be better that Jad Clowney from South Carolina. Donald is a Team Player. I know Tampa would probably go after the WR from Clemson or Some other High Draft choice WR or another TE. With Tampa bay has three high draft choices in the first 3 rounds. How about trading down to #10 with Detroit and see what is available there. and maybe get a 2nd or a 4th plus Det #1 pick Tampa would be ready to do draft damage and get ready for the 2014 season GO BUCS

Verner will wear #21, Barbers #20 will be in the ring of honor no doubt.

This was our 1 great signing.....it's a shame we don't get to team him with the BEST CB in FOOTBALL!!!

    Darrelle who?
  • avatar

It looks like this is a young guy playing well and coming into his prime, an excellent pick up. Some work left to do, but very positive. I think the DE we got will earn his money, the scheme he played last year stifled his sack talents and the DT McDonald is going to be excellent as well. 5.5 sacks is no slouch at DT. A much much stronger DL this year than last, yeah! The TE they got confused me a bit, I would have thought they would get womeone more like Pettigrew, who obstensibly is a good blocker and can catch, but what do I know. I hope they get Peanut too. I wonder if Khalil Mack LB is in their draft sights?

I reason I love this signing is it gives us great leverage in trading Revis if that's what they choose to do (which they shouldn't). The only decent CB's available now are Revis and D. Rodgers-Cromartie and DRC is just an okay CB.

Mac, I think Johnson played a lot last year as a D.E. in a 3-4 scheme. Think he's best suited as a 4-3 end. He got a C grade because his sack total dropped from the year before. Pairing him next to GMC I believe will make him a terror again. Media like Walters, don't always understand what a player was asked to do, or what a player will be asked to do for his next team. Love the signing.

Can't believe walter football gave the Johnson signing a C. IMO we had a great day with all the problems we had with this team. Looking forward to see what Licht and Lovie have planned for the draft.

The ratings are not in yet, but I’ve got to tip my hat to Lovie and Licht as there has been no NFL team that has been more aggressive or successful as the Bucs have been on their first day of FA. If this is any indication of how we will play this year, I am proud to be a Buc. Impressive!

Verner will play the Ronde Barber role in Lovie's Tampa 2. Wonder if they'll let him keep # 20 since I'm sure the Bucs will want to retire that jersey in the future. Love the signings so far. Unless their is someone we really covet at #7, now we can trade down, and get more picks. If we can land the center from G.B., and Collins, we've really done a great job revamping the line on both sides of the ball. Glad to see us doing it right from front to back end. If I'm correct Collins can play left, or right tackle, so the option is there to switch Dotson to the left side.

I can't believe we're only going to get a fifth round pick for Revis to the Patriots. It should be at least a second rounder; Either that or a third and fourth.

I knew logging back on would pay dividends! Verner was a favorite of mine coming out of UCLA along with Brian Price(unfortunately, things didn't work out for him).

This signing put a bigger smile on my face than all the previous signings; I'm hopefull the Bucs get every other player they're targeting; this would be phenomenal!

After starting free agency with 25 mil in cap space and signing Michael Johnson(5y/43mil), Clinton McDonald(4y/12mil), Alterraun Verner(4y/26mil), Myers (2y/4mil), Jamon Meredith, Danny Gorrer, Deveron Carr, and Eric Page, it seems the Bucs would have no less than 6 million left and thats before they cut Revis and Penn.
  • avatar

The new jerseys don't seem to be keeping the free agents at bay! Love day one! Let's see if they could restructure Revis' deal and have a dominant D, then focus on the offense!
  • avatar

Great Job so far Bucs! Tomorrow is gonna be exciting also! GO BUCS!!!
  • avatar

Now that's how you sell jerseys! Sign a team of pro-bowlers!

BTW Glad to see this team trying to bring talent across the board , I will assure the plan is not to start the season with L Johnson as your number two or three corner and an unproven 4th round nose tackle starting as the clowns prior did........AND BTW speaking of clowns , DOM you made some cap statements recently that are just plain and simply evasive,if you spread out Revis's 2014 salary through a bonus, his 2014 cap becomes just 6 mil, but you CLOWN, what does it become in 2015 . Something like 14 mil base plus roster bonus, plus three more years of 4 mil even if you cut him. So something like 18 mil and 4 mill of dead money for years if you cut him, quit it you Clown, you are plenty smart but quit trying to outsmart yourself. Too people in the know you do some really good things but statements like this just show your prove the world wrong mentality that got this team in this have to cut Revis position..............................................Great Job Today Bucs !!!

Good bye fat man Penn and Revis island; both you guys in no way earned your money. What a great day to be a Buc. We could possibly filll a lot of holes by the end of the day on Wednesday if we sign Collins and Smith. Our spot 7 is going to be interesting because we will have many options at our disposal. I am very happy that we at least have a 3rd rounder and not the 4th rounder. We will come out of this draft with three good early round draft picks that will make our team better. 8-8 is starting to look very solid and who knows what else we might be able to do. Go Bucs!

Agree Horse, typically we bemoan shortsighted roster mgmt and quick fixes. The guys Lovie/Licht are bringing in are in their prime, have many years left to play, and are signed up on contracts that are fair value and not onerous to the team. Something we haven't seen in our contract signings (overpaying, too much guaranteed, etc) in quite some time. I think the first three rounds will bring 3 quality players to team up with 7-8 new starters acquired in FA in just two days. That's over 50% of the starting 11 on each side of the ball. Love it.

Outstanding day. It's a great day for Tampa Bay. Way to go Mr. Licht and Mr. Smith, you earned your money today. GO BUCS!

I am thrilled with what the Buc's have done so far, best FA day in a long time. For the first time in several years, I am actually excited about the upcoming season. Hopefully we can still get the OT Collins from the Bengals, a veteran QB and then pick up a mid tier WR for insurance against Mike Williams not being on the roster. Then come draft day, we can go in so many different directions that we can pick BPA as opposed to reaching for a need.

Wow!! What a day! This regime is taking the league by the balls. I love every move so far. Some people relieve we overpaid or Johnson but I think he will be a huge difference. I was completely surprised about Clifton from Seattle. I like his motor and he's an upgrade over spence. I'm just really happy to see a direction from this staff with a seriousness on making a TEAM not just having a few great individuals. It's like Christmas in Tampa and I'm opening the gift everyday I log on. Bucs nation go bucs. One mans opinion.
