Tampa Bay added local product Louis Murphy to their receiving corps on Wednesday Murphy played college football at the University of Florida and was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2009.
The Buccaneers have been busy in free agency addressing their offensive line and defense, but had done little to improve their team speed at the offensive skill positions – until now. The Buccaneers have reached an agreement with former Lakewood High and University of Florida wide receiver Louis Murphy it was announced on Wednesday.

Murphy’s NFL stats won’t overwhelm many, but the former Gator wide receiver possesses something that has been lacking since the days of Joey Galloway, and that is the ability to stretch the field and get behind safeties.

Murphy’s 4.4-speed should be an asset in Tampa Bay and most likely gives him the upper hand in the battle for the No. 3 receiver on the team. Current starters Vincent Jackson and Mike Williams both possess their own talents, but taking a five-yard slant or outrunning coverage aren’t strengths for either receiver. In Murphy’s career the St. Pete Fla. native has receptions of 75 and 70 yards.

The 6-2, 200-pound wide receiver was a fourth-round draft pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2009 and posted a solid rookie season catching 34 passes for 541 yards and four touchdowns. He has played five seasons with the Raiders, Carolina Panthers and New York Giants, making 24 starts and catching 121 passes for 1,744 yards and eight touchdowns. Murphy, who starred at Lakewood High School, spent his collegiate career at the University of Florida and was a member of two BCS National Championship teams in Gainesville.

Earlier this month Tampa Bay re-signed WR/KR Eric Page and also have Chris Owusu, Skye Dawson, Russell Shepard and Tommy Streeter on the roster at wide receiver. Last season’s No. 3 receiver, Tiquan Underwood signed with the Panthers last week.

What is the real going rate for a Williams type WR? Maybe 2 million a yr tops.

For me, Murphy is a better replacement for Underwood. I don't believe he was intended to compete against Williams; that person is coming from the draft.

lovie did mention at the league meetings today that there were some young receivers on the roster that they liked. who knows what real coaches, and better scheme could do for us.

I'm pretty excited by this signing. With him and Chris Owusu, we have two young speedsters. Well, we have Streeter, but he seems to have further to go; I certainly hope for him as well. Page and Russel Sheppard have good agility. These are pretty interesting guys.

The Bucs should chill for a minute on signing depth players unless something becomes available that is of exceptional value. Second FA starts after the draft when some overpaid veterans will be released in favor of draftees. Before the Murphy signing, it was reported that the Bucs had 16.2mil in cap space. New Coach early practices begin on April 7. We will have a good idea by draft time of the wheat and the chaff! We should have even more cap space because there are players here now that will certainly be cut right after the draft. Lovie wants to make extending McCoy a priority. That will add considerable cap space too. This team is going to be re-made and they are not looking to the future, they want to win now! Music to my ears!

K-Swiss...I believe he was in for a visit about two weeks ago and left without a contract. I think he went to talk to the Rams and someone else. That's why I said I was surprised he came back and signed with us because once a player leaves most of the time they sign with someone else.

Boy do I hate UF skill position players in the NFL, but if we had to sign one I'm glad we got one with some speed. He sure beats Owusu. I don't have as much of a problem with Demps because I see him more as a special teams and gadget play guy more than a skill position guy.

Not sure which news I am happier about...the signing of Murphy with the Bucs...or the signing of Underwood with the Panthers! With Murphy and Demps, the Bucs have 2 of the fastest players in the league...not saying they're great, just saying they're fast! The new Bucs GM & coach continue to impress.

Surprised that he came back and signed with us. One year prove it deal works well as he gives us a deep threat and with Jackson and MW we should be able to have a passing attack. LI-LO are doing a fine job in filling most of the holes in FA. We should be able to go BPA in all rounds of the draft.

NOt sure what you mean by came back to sign with us.... Are you thinking of Frank Murphy?....

he meant that Louis Murphy came to One Buc for a visit a week or two ago but didnt sign until now.

Like this signing. He could be our #2.
