Bucs head coach Lovie Smith held his first post-practice press conference on Tuesday afternoon following a lively two-and-a-half hour workout, the first of a three-day voluntary minicamp. Smith complimented the effort and attendance but says there is still a lot of work to do. Below is a transcript of the press conference.

(Opening Statement)

“It’s always good to get started as much as anything. I mean for us, I don’t think any other team in the league is practicing already. So for us, the reasons why, the new staff, and we watch the guys on video, but we wanted a chance to get our hands on them and see them out here and let the players see our routine.

“For the most part, a typical day during the season will play out the way the practices, and really the schedule we have for the minicamp, through the day, we won’t practice that long once we get going during the season. But the guys haven’t complained about anything I, we, have asked them to do. They are anxious to prove where they belong on the depth chart. Were anxious to see where everyone belongs on the depth chart. And again, to set the pace we have a lot of work to do. We have a long way to go, but we will get there.

“Up tempo practice, and a lot of mistakes, which you’d expect, but you just want to set the bar as much as anything. We set the bar, we can’t wait to get back out here tomorrow and start it again.”

(On if there was 100 percent attendance on Tuesday)
“Yes, everyone has been here all off season really. And that’s what you expect, its voluntary work. But if you want to get better, why would you pass up an opportunity? So, I appreciate that from the team. They want to do something, all you can do at this time in April is just show up each day and try to get better, and they’ve done that.”

(On if one area will be slower to adjust to the new schemes)
“Through the years I would be hard pressed to say who’s behind or who’s ahead. We expect mistakes early on from most positions, but we expect quick improvement. We just ask the guys; don’t make the same mistakes over again. We set the bar today. We had some miscues out there, but we will have a few less tomorrow.”
(On the play of Mike Glennon today)
“Initial impressions on Mike is how they’ve been all along. He’s been a pro about everything. We’ve asked him to take a step back and let Josh [Mccown] take the lead position, he’s done that. He’s just trying to get better. That’s what we’re asking all our guys to do; to come in and prove your game. You’re competing against you as much as anything. Mike made some good throws out there today; he has good control of the offense at this stage. I like what he was able to do, of course I like what Josh McCown was also able to do today.”
(On the starting rotation at receiver)
“We’re working to get a starting rotation. It’s safe to say that Vincent Jackson will be out there once the season starts. And from there, we have some other younger players that will be in a position to prove to us that they belong in that position. We have a long ways to go. And again right now, I don’t know about some of our young receivers, except we have them on video and we get a chance to evaluate them a little bit more.”
(On the rotation at running back)
“Love what I have seen from them. We have three running backs that have 100-yard games on record, and that’s hard to say, for most teams to say. But I like their quickness that they have. I went in the room the other day and I asked them was there a requirement of being under 5-foot-10 of being in this room, but like everything about all of them, they can catch the ball, even though they haven’t been used that way, they can run inside of the tackles, both have good quickness that can make you miss, come to work with a smile on their face every day, I like that group of guys were going to have. As far as how many play, Doug Martin is our starter, they will all play, and we will let them have their reps.”

(On whether Nicks will be ready for training camp)
“I think that’s definitely a realistic goal. We’d like to think that until someone else tells me something otherwise. He’s been good. He has a ways to go, but it’s good for Carl just to get back into the mix with the rest of the group. Early on there’s a lot of mental work for all of our players. So we had a couple other guys. Dashon Goldson didn’t do anything. Mark Barron didn’t do a lot. But eventually those guys will get back into the fold. It’s just kind of good to get them back into the mix right now.”
(On the development of the team)
“Eventually we want to end up playing good football, not making any mistakes and executing the way we want them to. But you have to have a starting spot and that’s get through the first day. It was exciting to get to the first day of the offseason program and to get to Phase 1 of the program a few weeks ago. But to get out on the football field, there are growing pains you have to go through, that’s just who it is. Each year you start over. But for us, we just want to make improvement each day. No more than that. Make improvements and I’d be surprised if we didn’t have a better product on the football field tomorrow than we did today.”

(On if they will need to add players to run the defense he envisions)
“Of course with the draft we plan on adding to both sides of the ball. But I’m very confident (we have the basic components we need). You start with our three-technique. When you have Gerald McCoy on your team you have a little more giddy-up in your step. You come in knowing we have possible the best interior lineman on our team. We have a great linebacker. Lavonte David is as good an outside linebacker I think as there is. So that gives you confidence. I talk about our two big safeties. I saw Mark Barron and Dashon Goldson walking down the hall today I thought they were getting ready to into the linebacker room but they were going to the DB room. So we feel confident about it. Michael Johnson coming, Clinton McDonald, those guys getting into the mix. We can add some more but we have some scholarship player on our team right now.”
(On how the minicamp helps you evaluate for the draft)
“I think that’s a must. And that’s the good part about being a new staff, when you get this extra minicamp in. And for us, it’s one thing to watch guys on video, but you want to see them on the football field to know. Of course we want to see our roster, but with the draft coming up, we want to see exactly what we need. Maybe we’re not as strong or maybe we’re stronger than we think at some of the positions. And that’s what they’ll tell us during this camp. So I can’t tell you how much it helps. And for the team, they’re wondering, what’s the practice routine, how are these guys going to coach. Well, they know that now. So we got a lot of those questions answered quickly.”
(On the offensive line and shifting)
“We don’t want to do a lot of shifting. We want to be able to get five guys locked in. The offensive line normally does everything together so we eventually want to get to that. But at the same time, you want to have some guys with flexibility. We’ll dress seven offensive linemen each game. So we’ll have one guy that backs up on the outside and one guy that backs up on the inside and that guy on the inside, you’d like to have a guy that can play guard and center. A guy like Evan (Dietrich-Smith), he’s played a little guard. So you want flexibility there. You want to be able to lock the guys in and let them get comfortable in their position and I think it’s safe to say that Evan will be our center and hopefully can get a little more comfortable each day.”

Lovie is GENUINE and has all the NFL Experience a Coach needs to succeed, which is why he just exudes confidence. The players sense it and it soon results in all the players playing the game with confidence in themselves and the rest of their team, and their coaches. And I think the faithful Veteran Bloggers here like Horse and Scubog, and Maccabee are really getting excited and ready for this season to get going. I know I am. I have no worries at all about the Draft. I trust that L & L will fill the remaining holes with really good players. The difference between this year and last is like night and day! One of the failings last year in the passing game was that receivers were very rarely open, but that can be changed just with an OC that knows how scheme to achieve separation in the passing game. That will result in much fewer drops and each time give the opportunity for a completion and those factors together will movie the chains and score touchdowns. Fire the Cannons!!! Kinderrt's comments I second whole heartedly, but hope we fill the Franchise QB need in the first round this year so he will be ready to lead when Josh retires in a few years and have his back, and we should get a second round pick for Glennon before the draft starts or if not after we take the QB the Vikings need right after us, trade him to the Vikes then.

I am feeling very positive about all of this. Go Bucs!

Now if Schiano had made that "scholarship players" remark, fans would have blasted him back to Rutgers. But we all know what Lovie meant. As usual, Lovie speaks as his mentor Dungy did, with quiet confidence.

Lovie and the fans deserve a franchise QB. McCown will be fine for two years but we need that top QB that we never had to put us in the top five on the offensive side of the ball. As good as Lovie is on the defensive side of the ball you need to score to win. Licht needs to find that top QB, if not this year then go all in next year and get us that guy that can put this team on his back and carry us to another Super bowl.

    Good info, but please proofread.

Ok, Mark tell the truth! Isn't it much nicer working with this guy? Just kidding! Don't answer that, stay neutral and objective like a good journalist should. I just listened to the press conference and I liked the enthusiasm of the first day and how he constantly praises and reinforces his players. And the "Glasnost" or openness is refreshing. At the end, before he left he asked you guys if you had gotten what you were looking for. How long has it been since you have been so well received. As a frothing at the mouth fan, I don't have to be objective. I can say without hesitation, I like it and it's a welcome change!
