The Buccaneers Select TE Seferian-Jenkins In Second Round

With their second-round pick, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Washington TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who is 6-foot-5, 262 pounds. Seferian-Jenkins is the second large pass-catcher that the Bucs have drafted this year, following the selection of 6-foot-5 WR Mike Evans.
The Buccaneers could be fielding an NBA team on offense. With Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, the team’s first-round draft pick this year, both 6-foot-5 wide receivers, Tampa Bay added a 6-foot-5, 262-pound tight end in Washington’s Austin-Seferian Jenkins.

Seferian-Jenkins, a junior, is arguably the most complete tight end in the class, featuring excellent hands and blocking skills. He has a background in basketball and is the prototype tight end that teams are looking for in today’s NFL.

“It helps me so much,” said Seferian-Jenkins, who scored 19 points and had 36 rebounds while playing for the Huskies basketball team. “Being able to play basketball at a high level helps adjusting to the ball in the air – quick feet, quick hands, all that stuff definitely translates to playing tight end in the National Football League.

“I try and model my game after trying to be my own player. I think I try and do some of the things Jimmy Graham can do, he’s a phenomenal player I try to model myself after him and I try to model myself in the same aspect as Heath Miller being all around tight end.”

The Huskies star reportedly ran a 4.56 40-yard dash in a workout with the Jets earlier this month, which is his first reported 40-yard dash because he couldn’t run at the Combine or Pro Day. Seferian-Jenkins has first-round talent, but issues off-the-field issues stemming from a DUI arrest in March caused him to slide to the second round, and ultimately to the Buccaneers.

The talented tight end tallied 36 receptions, 450 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 2013 after a breakthrough sophomore campaign that saw him catch 69 passes for 852 yards and seven touchdowns. Seferian-Jenkins burst onto the scene as a freshman, hauling in 41 passes for 538 yards and six scores.

The junior tight end is a true difference-maker as a receiver. His rare combination of size and speed allow him to separate from linebackers, and he’s too big for defensive backs to cover one-on-one. Seferian-Jenkins has the athleticism to stretch the field and work the seam, while new Evans and Jackson handle the duties outside the numbers.

“I’m going to bring explosiveness, I’m going to bring play-making ability, and I’m going to bring blocking,” Seferian-Jenkins said. “I’m going to bring an all-around tight end that can play on all three downs and a guy that’s going to work hard and chase super bowls and a guy that’s going to win as many games as possible for Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization.”

The Washington standout joins a Buccaneers roster that already features veteran tight ends Brandon Myers and Tim Wright, who were both productive in 2013 for their respective teams. Those three tight ends will likely make the roster with Seferian-Jenkins as the probable starter as a rookie.

Tom Crabtree, Luke Stocker and Steve Manieri round out the rest of the tight ends that the Buccaneers will bring to training camp.

I really like this pick. It's funny he mentioned H. Miller because that's who he reminds me of since they're both top heavy TE's who can catch, run great routes and fairly good run blockers. I agree with everyone else that he was the BPA. Go Bucs!

Can you say Jimmy Giles? Give him 88

I must say, this was a surprise to me since the off season acquisitions already included two TE's.

I am fine with this pick. Now we have the tri towers. We will be able to run or pass short and will be unstoppable. I know some will go Huh with our 3rd round pick, but it really makes sense. We have too many small backs and we needed a bigger back.

@KINDERRT...I think that Mike Glennon will shock a lot of ppl this season. Go 'Bucs !!!!

Glennon won't see the field. McCown is playing best football he's ever played. in the zone.

iabucfan....Same here, I thought the same thing with the TE pick. Now thats the way to pick BPA. Not a big need but a good pick as it will make the whole offense better. Looks like we are stuck with Glennon for another year but we can improve the team this year and go all in for the top QB next year.
