Bucs Trade Up To Get OT Kevin Pamphile In Round 5

The Bucs began the third day of the NFL Draft with the selection of guard Kadeem Edwards in the fifth round, and then traded back up into the fifth round to acquire Purdue OT Kevin Pamphile. A two-year starter for the Boilermakers, Pamphile also has the versatility to play guard.
After drafting an offensive lineman in Tennessee State guard Kadeem Edwards in the fifth round, Tampa Bay traded back into the fifth round and selected another one in Purdue left tackle Kevin Pamphile a few spots later. The Bucs traded their seventh-round pick in 2014 to Buffalo, in addition to the 2015 fifth-round pick the team acquired after trading center Jeremy Zuttah to Baltimore in next year's draft to acquire Pamphile.

The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Pamphile had a solid, yet unheralded career at Purdue where he played left tackle. Pamphile started every game during his senior season at left tackle. He appeared in all 13 games as a junior, starting nine as the Boilermakers' blindside protector. He began his Purdue career as a defensive lineman in 2010 before moving to offense during the 2011 season.

Pamphile, whose nickname is "Big Kev," was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, but showed off his athleticism at the Purdue pro day where he ran a 4.92 and a 4.94 in the 40-yard dash and a 32-inch vertical leap. He also had a 9-foot broad jump and bench pressed 225 pounds 25 times, which is good for a player with over 34-inch arms.

Pamphile, who was listed as a sixth-round pick in PewterReport.com's Final 2014 Bucs' 7-Round Mock Draft, also has the ability to play inside at guard where the team could use some help with Carl Nicks still recovering from two toe surgeries and the Bucs having some unsung candidates to start in Jamon Meredith, Oneil Cousins, Patrick Omameh and Jason Foster. But the Bucs view the athletic Pamphile as more of a candidate to be a swing tackle due to his athleticism.

Anthony Collins will start at left tackle and Demar Dotson will start at right tackle in Tampa Bay. Meredith is the current swing tackle on the depth chart, but if he becomes a starting guard as expected, the team needs to have another viable option to fill that role, and that will likely be Pamphile, especially during his rookie season.

“I can any position, except center,” Pamphile said. “It’s kind of hard for me to snap. I can play either side; it’s not a problem for me at all.”

Pamphile was brought in for a pre-draft visit by the Buccaneers and he said that interaction played a vital role in him being selected by Tampa Bay.

“Coming in and visiting I felt at home, I felt the family warmth and everything,” Pamphile said. “I loved the coaches. Lovie Smith was a great guy. The offensive line coach, a great dude, I really enjoyed the meeting we had. I just felt comfortable and I know they felt the same way. I had a feeling it would be them.”

Here are Pamphile’s 2013 highlights from the Ohio State game.

Yes, I was being sarcastic. Taking a jab a those who think you draft from a shopping list of positions without regard to evaluations.

    Boiler up!!!!!

Scubog; I'm still laughing. Really funny stuff. Cheer up, the situation is not that bad and at least he has a big up side potential and I am okay with this. He sure has more experience than where Dotson started. I just moved us up to a C+ draft grade; in my opinion. We have experienced coaching which will help us. So far I am okay with the draft. No home runs, but we got a lot of singles which gave us a couple runs; oops wrong sport.

Horse: I believe scubog is being sarcastic by letting all the posters who obviously KNOW what the coaches do not. Some posters knowledge goes way beyond all our scouts with countless hours of filming, interviews and overall experience . Why they are not coaching our Bucs amazes me.

Dbuc63; Yes thank you, I knew that. Scubog keeps it funny and friendly.

Interesting that the Bucs selected Edwards & Pamphlet over Cyril Richardson & David Yankey (who had a horrible Sr. Bowl) & there were a ton of good CBs available in the 6th & we picked another WR. Oh well, we'll see how those guys pan out. I'm just shocked no defensive players were selected...at least Tedford must be thrilled.

I actually like him better than Edwards, on paper at least. They both have 34" arms but Pamphile is faster and better lower body strength (vertical jump). I think he'll stick as our backup swing tackle.

Oh my goodness, another need pick for Bucs fans to swoon over. Scratch another one off your bucket list. After taking successive O-linemen, like some were frantic over, Licht may now have returned to the good graces of Bucs Nation. So, after the trade there's only one remaining choice today. Hmmmmmm, what is our greatest need? Not QB, we now have the QB of the present and future. Not RB, we have too many of them now. Maybe we can trade one of those little runts. Not WR, already have two and that's all we really need. Not TE, we have way too many of them now. Not OL, we just drafted them back to back. Not DE, we already have Johnson and three youngsters. Not DT, we have GMC and the new guy from Seattle. Not LB, we have LVD and that's all we need. Not CB, we have last year's top draftee and a prize free agent. Not S, we have Barron and the Hawk. Not kicker, Connor is back. Not punter, got good one already. Not long-snapper, just signed a new one. Don't need a return man since kick-offs all go into the endzone and surely someone can field a punt. Looks like we have no more needs. Might as well call it a day.

Glad PR got one right. Props.
