The Buccaneers drafting of Austin Seferian-Jenkins made former Packers TE Tom Crabtree expendable and it was announced on Saturday that Crabtree had been released by Tampa Bay.
The drafting of tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins in last week’s NFL Draft created a logjam at the position and on Saturday the Buccaneers helped relieve the crowded meeting room by releasing former Packers tight end Tom Crabtree.

Crabtree announced it on Twitter early in the afternoon on Saturday.

“I've been released. Thank you to Lovie and the rest of the new staff for giving me a shot. That's a great group of guys. Expect big things.”

PewterReport.com soon confirmed with a league source verifying the release. An official announcement is expected to be released later on Saturday.

Crabtree was signed by the Buccaneers last spring to come in and compete for a starting spot, but an ankle injury in the Bucs final preseason game against the Redskins hampered the former Packer for the first part of the 2013 season. After getting back on the field Crabtree suffered another injury, this time a torn biceps, and was placed on injured reserve on November 25 of last year.

Crabtree was known primarily as a special teams standout in Green Bay before signing as a free agent with Tampa Bay but never was able to produce on the field due to the injury issues. In his Buccaneers career Crabtree caught just four passes for 21 yards with one touchdown, a jump pass from Mike James in the Buccaneers 27-24 loss to the Seahawks last November.

Besides Seferian-Jenkins the Buccaneers have three other tight ends on their current roster, incumbent starter Tim Wright, former fourth-round draft pick Luke Stocker and Brandon Myers who was signed last March as a free agent from the Giants.

Hey MC, is that biceps injury Crabtree had still a lingering issue? That's the only reason I can think of that he would be released instead of Stocker.

@roger4680 & macabee: Exactly what I was thinking!! There's definitely an angel looking out for him! :-)

Crabtree wasn't able to stay on the field and when he was on the field, he didn't make enough plays. Good luck to him at his next destination though. I like Myers, Seferian-Jenkins, and Wright at TE. They aren't known for their blocking and that's just fine by me. Think of two tight end sets...Myers/S-J or S-J/Wright with Jackson, Evans, Martin also on the field. That should be fun to watch.

Stocker won't make. Tim Wright will be the back-up and lower priced third stringer will come out of training camp.

OBP is getting to be like Dodge City these days. Not a safe place to be! I understand Luke Stocker is seeking refuge at an American Embassy! lol

There's probably lots more personal moves; this was just the biggest name guy that got released.

I think Stocker must have dirt on the Glazers or something
