The Buccaneers waived undrafted free agent quarterback Brett Smith then added another on Wednesday, along with a handful of other roster moves.
Tampa Bay had over 25 players in at One Buc last weekend for a tryout during their rookie mini-camp, and as of Wednesday hasn’t signed any of them. But the team did make some roster moves late Tuesday. The Buccaneers officially announced on Wednesday that they have signed tight end Cameron Brate, wide receiver Quintin Payton, quarterback Alex Tanney and tight end Ian Thompson.
Brate (6-5, 249, Harvard), Payton (6-4, 212, North Carolina State) and Thompson (6-4, 234, Louisiana-Lafayette) are rookie free agents, with Brate and Thompson participating in rookie mini-camps recently with Minnesota and Houston, respectively.
Payton was one of Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon’s favorite targets at North Carolina State, catching 58 passes for 905 yards and two touchdowns with Glennon under center.
Adding Brate fills an offseason depth need as the Buccaneers waived tight end Tom Crabtree last Saturday and second-round draft pick, rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins is still dealing with a foot injury and was unable to participate for the most part in last weekend’s rookie mini-camp. Also on the roster at tight end is Luke Stocker, free agent Brandon Myers and last year’s starter Tim Wright.
Tanney (6-4, 220) entered the NFL in 2012 as a college free agent from Monmouth (IL), where he set the NCAA record for all-time career touchdown passes with 157. Tanney has been a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns, including spending the final five weeks of the 2013 season on the Browns active roster.
Tanney became an internet sensation during his senior season at Monmouth when a video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxDJb03a0yo
) of him making several trick shots was released on Youtube.com. The video has had nearly 4 million views to date.
The team also announced that it has waived defensive lineman David Hunter, punter Jacob Schum and quarterback Brett Smith.
