The Buccaneers have set a goal to raise $20,000 to give to the Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Fifth Annual Bright House Networks Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge. On Tuesday a number of players and employees will have their heads shaved to raise money and awareness for the cause.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, June 3 at 1:00 p.m., at least 30 Tampa Bay Buccaneers players and staff, including defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, quarterback Mike Glennon, defensive end Michael Johnson, kicker Connor Barth, and Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford will have their heads shaved as part of the Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s Fifth Annual Bright House Networks Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge. Children who have previously battled or are currently battling cancer will visit the team’s practice facility, One Buccaneer Place, to assist with the head shaving event, through which the Buccaneers have a goal of raising $20,000 towards the cause.

The Buccaneers proudly support the Pediatric Cancer Foundation’s efforts towards providing medical research, programming and pediatric care for children and their families fighting pediatric cancer and blood disorders. Each year, members of the Buccaneers serve as celebrity runway escorts for young children battling cancer at the annual Fashion Funds the Cure fashion show to benefit the Pediatric Cancer Foundation. In the fall of 2012, the Buccaneers also hosted children and families affected by pediatric cancer to kick off National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month by dedicating a “Wall of Hope” at One Buccaneer Place. The Wall was displayed throughout the month of September as a daily reminder of the Buccaneers' commitment to pediatric cancer research.

This spring, organizations throughout Tampa Bay have lent their support in the fight against cancer through the Fifth Annual Bright House Networks Cut for a Cure Charity Challenge. On Tuesday, June 3, Buccaneers players and staff, including those listed below, have committed to join the cause and will have their heads shaved by pediatric cancer patients at One Buccaneer Place. This year, nearly $280,000 has been raised through the Cut for a Cure to support the Pediatric Cancer Foundation and select nonprofit organizations. Fans are encouraged to join the Buccaneers in the fight against pediatric cancer by making a donation through the team’s fundraising page at www.pcfcutforacure.org.

What a noble gesture of support for these youngsters who are literally are in a battle for their lives. At 17, my son was diagnosed with AML leukemia which has a 20% to 50% cure rate. At that age he was all too aware of his own mortality. He lost his appendix, his spleen and of course his hair while in the hospital for 8 straight months. His doctors and nurses never thought he would survive when he contracted fungal pneumonia and put in an induced coma, on a ventilator and given a white blood cell transfusion as a last resort. His "you just gotta roll with the punches" attitude kept his spirits up. Now 26 and cancer free, the daily setbacks we all face and a 4-12 season aren't such a big deal.

I Love feel good stories such as that scubog. I have a little girl who is 18months and I don't know how string I could be if something like that happened. She is my only child and my entire world. May your family be free of this for the rest of their lives! Go bucs and I'd shave my head too....but I'm already bald so.......
