Adams, Others Held Out Of Practice
The Bucs were without a few key players for Wednesday's practice, including DE Gaines Adams, who is nursing a groin injury. Plus, the Bucs re-signed LB Matt McCoy, LB Adam Hayward could see more playing time, K Mike Nugent seeks redemption and other news and notes from One Buc Place.
   
Johnson Adds To Offense
The Buccaneers discussed the changes in their offense with Josh Johnson replacing Byron Leftwich as the starting QB. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson and Johnson discussed their background together and why that facilitates a smooth transition. Olson and RT Jeremy Trueblood highlighted Johnson's mobility.
   
Bucs Still Confident In Bates' Defensive Scheme
Tampa Bay's defense ranks 31st in the NFL. It hasn't been doing a good job of defending the run or pressuring the quarterback. The Bucs know that must change, but despite their struggles the players still are confident in defensive coordinator Jim Bates' scheme.
   
Seeking New Contract, Penn Has Played Outstanding Football
The Bucs have gotten off to a dismal, 0-3 start to the 2009 season, but have received great individual play from LT Donald Penn. Penn, who has not allowed a sack this season and shut out both DeMarcus Ware and Osi Umenyiora in 2009, wants to be known as one of the best left tackles and paid like one, too.

UPDATED: Tampa Bay fell to 0-4 on the season by losing on the road to Washington, 16-13. The Bucs saw a 10-0 halftime lead vanish after the Redskins outscored them 16-0 in a lifeless third quarter. Two missed field goals by Mike Nugent in the first half and two second-half turnovers doomed the winless Buccaneers.
