During OTAs and mini-camp the idea of Henry Melton seeing time at defensive end was floated around here and there – even from Melton himself – but don’t expect to see any shakeups involving the interior tackle this season.
After Melton was occasionally seen lining up at the five-technique during Thursday’s practice speculation was raised once again, but quickly put to rest.
“No, same thing, training camp guys are going to be a lot of places,” head coach Lovie Smith said after practice. “I think our defensive ends needed a blow. That’s probably why we did that. Don’t look too much into that. Henry is an inside player for us.”
So while Melton took a few reps at edge rusher, expect to see Jacquies Smith, George Johnson, T.J. Fatinikun and Lawrence Sidbury handle the vast majority of first and second-team snaps at defensive end next Saturday in Minnesota.
Melton has generally been rotating with Clinton McDonald on first-team defense, even stepping in for Gerald McCoy at times.
