Moments after the Buccaneers selected Jameis Winston with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the 21-year old quarterback, spoke to members of the Tampa Bay media via a conference call from Bessemer, Ala.
(Winston on how he will win people over)
“It’s all about working hard and actions speak louder than words. So for you, I’m just going to work my tail off and that’s what any good man in this country would do.”
(Winston on his feelings after being selected by Tampa Bay)
“I was elated, very elated. As soon as I got the call I just started thing about ways I can serve my teammates, ways that I can make them happy without even stepping on the field yet.”
(Winston on the leap from college to the NFL)
“I’m just trying to work hard, go in day in and day out and throw my body out there and give my teammates everything I got. Show that I’m willing to sacrifice my body for our team’s success.”
(Winston on expectations and handing pressure)
“I’m blessed. I’ve been blessed with that my whole life. I like cherishing every moment and Love to make things happen. The reason I’m so confident is I work hard. My hard work pays off and I’ve been doing good so far and I don’t plan on stopping.”
(Winston on why he can succeed)
“One thing I don’t do is live in the past and I will not be negative. I’m very optimistic about this situation. I’m very happy that I got the chance. I‘m sure everyone knows that statistic, but there are also a lot of quarterbacks that have been in this league a long time and it’s been my long life dream to be a successful quarterback and a good teammate in the NFL.”
(Winston on throwing to Jackson and Evans)
“I got two of them. Oh my gosh, two 6-5 guys that can make plays after the ball. My friend, anyone can go out there and throw to those guys. It’s definitely a blessing that I have those guys. I’m looking forward to working with those other weapons as well, Louis Murphy and even Doug Martin and my offensive line. I just want to work with anybody. This is going to be a great journey and it all starts with hard work, dedication and sacrifices.”
(Winston on what FSU teammate he would choose to join him in Tampa)
“That’s a hard decision. We got so many great people in this draft. We have Ronald Darby and P.J. Williams. We have two of my most favorite people in the world in Nick O’Leary and Rashard Green and we have the people that take care of me, being my whole offensive line, Cam Erving who’s probably going to be picked in the first round Tre’ Jackson. We have such great players, Carlos Williams, at Florida State I’ve been so blessed to play with such great players, that would be a very hard decision for me. Obviously I’m closer with P.J. Williams and Darby, Nick O’Leary and Rashard Green, but it’s so hard to choose one of those guys. I just know all those guys are going to have great success at the next level and I look forward to hearing their names called.”
(Winston on managing pressure of being No. 1 selection)
“Again, it’s just about working hard and serving my teammates. I believe that we have such great men in that organization, in that facility, that can help me become a better player and I can help them become a better player as well. Not looking back on the negative, not looking back on the past, I’m only looking forward, only trying to get better every single day and I’m very optimistic with this situation so pressure is no pressure. I have great teammates, I have great coaches, great people involved in this organization and again, I just thank the Glazers for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to taking advantage of it.”
(Winston on not going to Chicago)
“It was about being with family, being with the people that were with me from day one, through the pain the adversity, all the naysayers, just being with the people that have always been there. Being able to hold my little brother, I’m doing that right now. Being able to kiss my grandmother. Being with my family. It’s always good to be with your family.”
(Winston on possibly being a risk)
“I can’t talk about negatives. I’m so elated to be a Buccaneer, so read to play. I’m just looking forward to earning everything I work for, I can’t talk about negative things.”
(Winston on fans who are worried about him)
“I just work. Like I said, I have to work and actions speak so much louder than words. What they may have read, what they may have heard, it’s about your actions. And whatever is in the past is in the past and I just look forward to gaining everyone’s trust.”
(Winston on what it meant for the Bucs to take the time in getting to know him)
“I just want to make sure, I have been cleared six times on that situation. I took that situation so seriously, but at the end of the day I got to keep moving forward and that’s why I’m so thankful right now to be with my family and I continue to thank the Glazers and Mr. Licht and coach Smith for believing in me. Even the people that have cleared me the six times I have been cleared, and I can’t let them down.”
(Winston on his thoughts about the Tampa Bay Area)
“Looks like a great family town. I just look forward to being in the town with teammates and getting to know everybody, not just the locker room, get involved in the community. I have a seven-year-old brother here in my lap right now, I can’t wait to spend time in local elementary schools and I’ve already been talking with Mr. Brooks about going to his school and speaking to those kids. It’s going to be so great. And this is not just a draft day. This is about being with people in the community and being a great young man and I really would want the city of Tampa to build me and help me become a better young man and become someone that they would want in their community.”

If that doesn’t fire up fans; then what does? Go Bucs!
It sure does Horse! Excited Bucs fan here!!! All the way from Cali!
I’m excited man! I put my trust into the FO to make the choice they felt best. I wouldn’t have minded their decision whether it be MM or JW, I”M STOKED WE HAVE A QB. Let’s go Jaboo…I’m confident in you and think that you can help the Bucs put the pieces together towards ultimate success!! #itsabucslife …..and i’m fucking excited (excuse my french)
And just how can even the most highbrow, halo wearing person not find Jameis’ words encouraging? As he alluded; it’s time to move on and stop bringing up things he did as 19 year old. He’s answered those same questions verbally 100 times. Let the young man do as he asked, and show us with his actions.
Can’t wait to see pics online with Pink, and his family posing with Winston at fan day!! I can read the future. Pink, he really won me over, didn’t know he was such a great kid till I got to talk to him, and see how he interacted with the fans. Nice young man after all.
Words are words actions matter , so time will tell
