Before seeing new Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston even throw his first NFL pass, some are already making some bold predictions about his success – or in some cases his lack thereof. And not just fans, but members of the national media.
CBSSports.com NFL writer Will Brinson released his NFL predictions for wins in 2015 for every NFL team and doesn’t see the Bucs making a run at the NFC South this year. While fair, and a prediction I tend to agree with, Brinson, in his commentary on the Bucs, said he thinks Winston will struggle mightily tossing the pigskin to the right team.
In his predictions released on Wednesday Brinson wrote, “I think he’s the most “pro ready” quarterback in this class and will probably have more immediate success than Marcus Mariota, but I also think he’s going to throw 30 interceptions. Yes, THIRTY.”
The former FSU star certainly struggled at times last season with turnovers, particularly in the first half of games, tossing a total of 18 interceptions in 2014 for the Seminoles, and there is reasons to believe Winston’s interception total will be inflated at least the early in his career with his gunslinger mentality. But to say 30 interceptions? The only Buccaneer quarterback to eclipse the 30 mark was Vinny Testaverde who threw 35 picks in 1987.
I see Winston throwing interceptions in 2015, but I would be hard pressed to believe it will approach 30. Time will tell, and I may eat my words come the January 1 after the regular season is over, but if I am a betting man (which I am not) I would certainly take the under.
