Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Ronde Barber was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week on Wednesday.

Barber recorded eight tackles, one sack and an interception while helping to lead Tampa Bay to a 20-10 win over division rival Carolina last Sunday. Both his interception and sack came in the fourth quarter of that contest.

A ninth-year veteran, Barber accomplished several feats during last Sunday’s contest vs. Carolina. He started his 100th career game and became the first defensive back in NFL history to record 20 sacks and 20 interceptions over the course of a career. He also tied former Bucs CB Mike Washington for third place in franchise history with 28 career interceptions.

“I think he’s great,” Bucs head coach Jon Gruden said of Barber being named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. “I’m just happy he gets that national respect, because he’s accomplished things that no one in this league has ever done. People will say that it’s the system that allows him to do these things; that’s a crock. He’s a great player. He’d function, he’d flourish on anybody’s team, I believe. I’m just really happy for him, because nobody works at it like he does. He’s getting results again and again and again. God bless him. Hopefully he’s got a lot left these next few weeks.”

The award marks the fifth time in Barber’s career that he’s been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week.

Barber ranks third on the team with 93 tackles and has recorded a team-leading five interceptions, two sacks and 20 passes defensed through 13 games this season.

Bryant Kicks During Practice
Bucs kicker Matt Bryant didn’t kick off, but he did kick field goals during Wednesday’s practice at One Buc Place. His probable status for Saturday’s game in New England remained unchanged after Wednesday’s workout.

Bucs defensive tackle Anthony McFarland was held out of practice for the second straight day due to a hamstring injury. He’s listed as doubtful for the Patriots game. Linebacker Marquis Cooper (chest) is probable.
