Week 3: Pewter Player Of The Game – LB Danny Lansanah
The Buccaneers were soundly beaten by the Falcons, 56-14, in a truly forgettable game in Atlanta on Thursday night. The Falcons raced out to a 56-0 lead through the first three quarters – the largest deficit the Bucs have faced since their inception in 1976.
Tampa Bay’s defense was horrific, allowing Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan to complete 87.5 percent of his passes and throw for three touchdowns before being relieved in the fourth quarter by backup T.J. Yates. By then the Falcons had scored 42 points on offense, in addition to a defensive score and a special teams touchdown.
After the team’s first touchdown of the night, Bucs backup strongside linebacker Danny Lansanah capped off the game with a 27-yard touchdown on an interception return. The score was Lansanah’s first in the NFL. Lansanah also posted a career-high four tackles in the loss to Atlanta, which earned him this week’s Pewter Player of the Game honors.
“I think we were in Cover 3 and I went through my drop progression,” Lansanah said. “I saw the receiver run an in route and I saw the quarterback look that way. Coach Lovie [Smith] and Coach Hardy [Nickerson] said to break on the QB’s eyes and I did, I caught the ball and scored.”
Lansanah is competing with Jonathan Casillas to be the team’s full-time starting strongside linebacker and Thursday’s touchdown may aid his cause.
“I just go out there every day and do my best,” Lansanah said. “I’ll let the coaches and the front office take care of all that. I just control what I can control, which is to go out and work hard all day and give 100 percent.”
