The Buccaneers return to Raymond James Stadium for the second and final time this preseason, as they take on Josh McCown and the Cleveland Browns Saturday night.
Tampa Bay is coming off an impressive outing in Week 2, where they showed noticeable progression from Week 1 on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Jameis Winston started fast, was in command of the huddle and spread the ball around efficiently (first eight passes to eight different guys). Defensively, the front four was applying steady pressure, while the backend was taking full advantage of any opportunity. Linebackers were also flying around in both the passing and running game, even scoring a safety when Danny Lansanah burst through the B gap to close in on Bengals running back Cedric Peerman in the fourth quarter.
This week, they’ll look to correct glaring mistakes and continue moving forward. Tampa had 14 penalties last week, 12 of which were on offense and special teams. Head coach Lovie Smith said Friday that limiting penalties would be a major point of emphasis, saying, “We can’t beat ourselves like that.”
Traditionally, the third preseason game is the closest simulation to a regular season matchup. Smith said that the plan is for starters to go a “series or so” into the third quarter.
The Bucs will also be without a few players this week. Wide receivers Mike Evans and Kenny Bell will be sidelined with tweaked hamstrings and cornerback Leonard Johnson will be out with an ankle injury. Evan Smith, who has a groin injury, is expected to miss a second straight week, leaving Jeremiah Warren as the likely starter at center.
