The Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday announced that they have signed defensive end Larry English and waived (injured) Jibreel Black. English (6-2, 255) originally entered then NFL as a first-round draft pick (16th overall) of the San Diego Chargers in 2009 out of Northern Illinois. In five seasons with San Diego (2009-13), English played in 52 games with nine starts, recording 80 tackles, 11.0 sacks, two passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.
English has suffered a number of injuries (foot fracture, torn biceps) that affected his career, limiting his playing time and eventually leading to his release by the Chargers last month.
Chargers GM Tom Telesco released this statement after English’s release in July of this year.
“We’d like to thank Larry for his five years of dedicated service to the Chargers,” Telesco said. “Larry always gave us everything he had on the field while making significant contributions to many deserving organizations in the San Diego community.”
As a senior at Northern Illinois English was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year by the MAC News Media Association as well as Sporting News. He led the Huskies with eight sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss and he was an All-MAC choice for the third consecutive season.
