The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released the names of seven of the players the team has signed to its eight-man practice squad. All seven players were with the Buccaneers at some point during the team’s 2005 preseason.
“Seven of the guys were, and we’ll add another guy hopefully at some point,” Bucs head coach Jon Gruden said. “We feel like the guys we had did a good job competing. Some of those guys were close calls and we’re happy to have them back.”
Here is a list of the seven players assigned to the Bucs’ practice squad:
Linebacker Matt Grootegoed Center Scott Jackson Cornerback James Patrick Safety Kalvin Pearson Wide receiver DeAndrew Rubin Running back Derek Watson Defensive end Andrew Williams
Safety Claudius Osei, who hails from Germany, but played collegiately at Florida State, was assigned to the Bucs’ practice squad as an NFL Europe National Player. He will remain on Tampa Bay’s practice squad for developmental purposes, but cannot be signed to the team’s active roster this year. Osei, who spent the 2005 training camp with the Bucs, does not count against Tampa Bay’s eight-man practice squad.
The Bucs have one spot left open on their practice squad, but according to a published report in Monday’s Miami Herald, Tampa Bay may have filled that spot with former Dolphins safety Tony Bua. However, Bucs officials wouldn’t confirm the signing of Bua, who was a standout linebacker/safety at the University of Arkansas from 2001-04.
