Not only is Tampa Bay in the process of trying to create several million dollars in salary cap space in order to sign its 12 draft picks, the Buccaneers may need to clear out even more room to sign some more free agents.

One of the free agents the Bucs have expressed interest in signing is former New England Patriots cornerback Ty Law.

Bucs general manager Bruce Allen confirmed Tampa Bay’s interest in signing the 31-year-old cornerback on Thursday, and according to, Law has even had a contract proposal faxed to him by the Bucs.

“We have talked to his agent,” Allen said.

The Bucs don’t appear to have the money or a need to sign a veteran cornerback with Pro Bowler Ronde Barber and Brian Kelly in the starting lineup again this season. However, although Tampa Bay signed Juran Bolden to a one-year deal worth league minimum earlier in the offseason, the Bucs may still feel the need to try and further solidify the nickel cornerback position.

Tampa Bay may also feel that it needs an insurance policy should Barber, who has expressed displeasure with his current contract, which has two more years left on it, decide to hold out of training camp. Despite not being happy with his deal, Barber did attend Tampa Bay’s mandatory mini-camp, which suggests he’ll report to training camp with his teammates on July 28.

According to, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Kansas City, Miami, and the New York Jets are also interested in obtaining Law’s services.

A three-time Super Bowl winner with the Patriots, Law has been sidelined since last October with a broken foot. In fact, Law played in just seven games in 2004. Although he’s still recovering from the foot injury, several reports have suggested that Law expects to be ready to go by the start of training camp.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Law was released in February in a salary cap maneuver. He notched 533 tackles, 36 interceptions, four sacks and 90 passes defensed during his 10-year career in New England.
