Bucs linebacker Lavonte David has had a rough past couple months, losing his cousin in the spring and then his mother, Lynette, who passed away in March.

Lynette sat front and center at David’s press conference last August as her son signed a five-year contract to remain in Tampa, a reward he followed up with his first Pro Bowl season and fourth leading the Bucs in tackles. David credited his mom for his success then – and bought her a house as his first purchase – and said Wednesday that she’ll continue to guide him.
“She was my pride and Joy,” David said. “Anybody that knows me knows she’s my pride and joy. She’s going to be with me like she’s always been with me. I talk to her every day and she’s going to guide me through the rest of my life, and I’m glad I made her proud before she went away. I’m going to continue to try to make her proud.”
David’s fellow linebacker and mentee, Kwon Alexander, experienced a similar loss last October when his brother died two days before their Week 8 contest in Atlanta, a game in which Alexander led the way with 11 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in a 23-20 win. The team rallied around its then-rookie linebacker then, and David feels that same connection with his friends and teammates now.
“It was a tough situation with (Kwon Alexander) losing who he lost and me losing who I lost,” David said. “But I’m back and my family has a good support system. They kept me going, kept my spirits high and they reach out to me every day to see how I’m doing. So far, I’m doing good.”
