Bucs general manager Jason Light told NFL Network’s Judy Bautista earlier on Thursday the Tampa Bay Buccaneers tried to find a reason to not draft former FSU quarterback Jameis Winston but couldn’t find anything to discourage them. The Glazers also asked the Bucs front office to give them a reason to not select Winston. They came up empty. After a grueling and extensive vetting process Tampa Bay selected Winston with the first pick on Thursday night, kicking off the NFL Draft and beginning what the organization and fans hope is a brighter future for the franchise.
Winston is a polarizing figure and not all fans will be on board due to some questionable character issues that occurred while Winston was a student-athlete for the Seminoles. The former Heisman Trophy winner was accused of sexual assault in 2012 and although no charges were filed, and Winston was also cleared in a in a university Code of Conduct hearing. Winston also had a well-publicized incident where were was cited for stealing seafood from a Tallahassee Publix supermarket and was also suspended for a game in 2014 after standing on a table an shouting a vulgar internet meme. Despite these, and a couple other transgressions, the Bucs, after a thorough investigation decided that Winston’s issues were more of the immaturity variety.
In his college career, Winston, the first overall No. 1 selection by the Buccaneers since 1987, completed 562 passes on 851 attempts (66 percent) for 7,964 yards with 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. As a starter at FSU the Bessemer, Ala. native was 26-1, helping the Seminoles to the 2013 national championship and also winning the Heisman Trophy as a redshirt freshman.

Some one check and see if pinkstob is still alive!!??
Yes, I am alive and well. What were you expecting?
You to call ur sources and find out what went wrong
welcome to Tampa Jaboo
Like a broken mirror, 7 more years of losing.Fools for turning down Philly’s offer.
So you wanted a pick in the 20s a pick next year, probably around 20, a qb who can’t stay healthy and a lag rusher? Glad you’re not our gm.
Thanks for the memories, I will no longer support this team.
See ya! Wont miss you
Wont miss you either!
The bucs have no class nor have the best qb in the draft
don’t need gator lovers anyways!
No loss to the team or the true fans jerk.
So long BucNtears !!! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. On second thought, go ahead, let it hit !! We don’t need any pretend fans here anyway.
As the Soup Nazi would say, “Adios Muchacho” As soon as the team starts winning you’ll be back. Tennessee is nice this time of year. Say hello to BF47.
lol, Ahh, I miss your arguments with him! I actually miss bf47 as he always was able to have a strong opinion and whether most of us liked it or not, it was always constructive and well thought out.
Okay – this is our horse, hitch-up the wagon and let’s get this thing moving…..GO BUCS!
Love it. Ready to compete. Go Bucs!!!!
40 years of being a Buc fan through the good and the bad. Made it through Freeman, bad player but not a thug. This time I cannot continue. I can’t go out in public and proudly wear anything Buc’s. It’s a shame, all my Buc gear from 40 years is now on the curb waiting for the trash pickup tomorrow. I want my home team heroes to be someone I can be proud of,. I lost all respect for the Glazer family and everything their father and foundation stood for. The only good thing is L & L will be gone shortly. What a couple of morons. Bucmeister leaving the blog and going to a team that cares about the type of product it puts out. I am truly embarrassed for the city of Tampa.
Well don’t let the door hit your a$$ hit you on the way out
I’m building a nice game room, I would love to buy some of your bucs memorabilia…PM me please! lol
You’ll be back Bucmeister. I know you’re pissed… But, if the kid keeps his head on straight and start to bring some wins to the team…
Good luck finding a team to cheer for Bucmeister, all teams have a couple of sour grapes. Most have even more. Why don’t you go cheer for America’s Team, oh wait, their guy is suspended for 10 games!!
And some folks call Winston immature. To cheer for a team nearly 40 years and then run to your room to pout and take the “I’m going to take my ball and go home” approach is just a tad childish isn’t it? For goodness same, the guy isn’t Aaron Hernandez, Aqib Talib, Legarette Blount or a rule-bending HC. Oh, those bad character Patriots didn’t seem to cause their fans to go squealing back to their mommie’s basement.
I just became an instant Titans fan! Lovie Smith continues his long legacy of failing to evaluate QB talent. Licht is obviously above his head, he doesn’t have a clue. I will always love the Bucs of the Dungy-Gruden era. A bust QB for a bust team. Goodbye Buccs!!!!
The Gruden ERA? He played his former team in the SuperBowl-( WON sweet!!)
and our boys haven’t won a playoff game since…Great Season-ABSOLUTELY. Lovie will get the Bucs back to the playoffs year to year
Solid pick. Any draft pick is a risk but this is as good a pick as one can make. For those “fans” who now say that because of this draft pick they will no longer root for the Bucs, are now cheering for a different team, lost all respect for blah, blah, blah, etc., please keep your word and go away. Stay off this site or any other Bucs related site. Your opinions and comments are no longer of interest. Go Bucs!!!!
I second your comments!
Damn right!!!! I agree
Dumb and dumber (L&L) just drafted geno smith 2.0 – see you guys in 2016
Good riddance to the bandwagoneers… and WELCOME to the future, Bucs fans! Wahoo!!! e
I absolutely hated what the Bucs gave up in the Jack Thompson, Keyshawn Johnson, and Darell Revis trades, but I didn’t stop supporting my team!
In five years we will view this like Manning/Leaf. Mariota might be in the league; Winston will be a top 5 QB. If you say you won’t support the Bucs because of Winston good luck finding an NFL team that meets your incredibly naive criteria. Every team has jerks, a holes and despicable guys.
I’m not thrilled with this and, frankly, I can understand this being a back breaking straw for some folks. This guy has VERY legitimate character concerns. Let’s not pretend otherwise. Personally, I’m going to pray for the kid and hope like crazy that VJax and McCoy can keep him straightened out. If he gets in any trouble, folks won’t be tolerant and he’ll have to be shipped out of town. This is risky. Lord help us! Go Bucs.
Lol just wow to majority of you. Please, go. Im tired of your garbage. Condeming someone without being convicted. Really, what a joke. Hed 20 god damn years old. All of you are saints huh? Hahahahahaha whatever. Im gonna enjoy winston throwing Tds to mike evans again and again.to those who are saying bye, please Go be a fan team of another team, you really wont be missed..at all.
I haven’t been this happy as a Buc fan since we won the S Bowl. Welcome to Tampa Jaboo.
very disappointed in bucs top draft pick. They didn’t get the best qb or the best man in this draft.. As a season tkt holder,,,This sux.
Where’s Pink? He should be the first one commenting…he’s on the second six pack at the moment…lol j/k
I am very happy about this pick. We also are in avery good spot to take a OT that can be a starter from the get go. Go Bucs!
I actually hope we go G and get AJ Cann, then a T with the #3. Would love the draft if it falls like this. Best draft in a very long time if pieces fall to us. At least on paper, you can never tell. Sometimes even the sure fire locks turn into the biggest bums around when they hit the NFL.
I like AJ Cann too
Horse, I don’t like Collins or Clemmings at all, think they are both way too overrated. I do like Sambrailo, not sure if he will make it to our #3, I can only pray. Maybe with the run on OL, other teams will see the value in other positions and he will fall to us. I have all fingers and toes crossed for these two guys to come to Tampa Bay and protect Winston and blow open holes in the run game. GO BUCS !!!
Dysfunctional team with talent deficit and multiple flaws, drafts talented but dysfunctional quarterback with multiple character issues. Good luck with that one then!
Well, I have peace that I did everything I could to get Mariota drafted over Winston in a respectful manner by stating facts along with my opinions because I think Mariota will be the better player. The pressure is now on Winston and his supporters for him to be successful. Between his INT’s, off field issues, lack of athleticism, lack of immaturity and sense of entitlement that leaves a lot of opportunity to fall off the wagon. I wouldn’t want to be in their shoes playing those odds. So I’ll finish this post by saying two things. I’ll evaluate Winston’s performace fairly like I would any other player the Bucs add to the team. If he plays well I’ll support him and if he doesn’t I’ll condemn him. If nothing else I try to be consistent and that’s what I’ve done with every other player the Bucs have taken in. Since he’s “pro ready” the evaluating process starts Week 1 (preseason is just that…only practice). The other thing is I’m disappointed in the Glazers for not only supporting this move but publically so. If they were going to finally put all their eggs in one player, why him? You can fire L&L but the Glazers will never live this down if Winston fails. They said they were comfortable with him when they could have said nothing and rode out the potential storm. They’ll never hear the end of it if Winston fails and there’s so many ways he can potentially fail.
I’m with you pinkstob, I would have picked MM over JW but my first choice was to trade down and get more players. Time will tell and with all the flack you may get the final say in 4 years. Time will tell.
Dbuc63, it was great not to have to go through all of this solo. Indeed, the final chapter has not been written in all of this.
Great pick, win some games and the rest will take care of itself. Day 2 will be interesting with so many talented players on the board at areas of need.
I hated the Freeman selection and thought he was mediocre in college and it was a Raheem Hook up from K-State, but when he wore the Bucs Uniform he was my qb and I supported him, even apologized to Scu saying I was wrong after Freeman had that great season, but in the end I was right, these fans pouting that they didn’t get their guy well boo hoo and I don;t care if they jump ship most Bucs Fans do anyway when things don;t go their way and guys like Scubog, Horse and I will still be in the stadium cheering on our team
I’m with ya jongruden I’m tired of the constant crap about character concerns if cussing and and getting a hookup from a fan is criminal…then probably every athlete in pro sports better turn themselves in…Go 3!! Go Bucs!!
