The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed wide receiver/kick returner Frank Murphy on injured reserve Wednesday.
The Bucs filled that vacant 53-man roster spot by signing former New Orleans Saints WR Derrick Lewis.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Lewis played in three games with the Saints in 2003, catching one pass for seven yards. Lewis originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State in 2002.
Murphy, who served as the team’s primary kickoff returner, ruptured his Achilles’ tendon during the first half of last Sunday’s game against Denver. He was averaging 26 yards per return.
The Bucs have placed three receivers — Murphy, Edell Shepherd and Sylvester Morris — on IR this year. Receivers Joey Galloway (groin), Joe Jurevicius (back) and Keenan McCardell (holdout) have also been out of action.
