Lionel Gates was hoping to work his way onto Tampa Bay’s active roster this season, but those plans came to a halt Thursday night when the 25-year old running back was arrested in Hillsborough County and charged with three felonies — armed burglary on an occupied residence, battery on a pregnant female and criminal mischief of $1,000 or more.
Authorities claim Gates entered Peggie Lavender’s apartment by kicking in the door at approximately 11:30 p.m. ET. Lavender, 28, used to romantically involved with Gates, but it is unclear whether the two were dating at the time of Thursday night’s incident.
From there, Gates allegedly broke two television sets, broke two doors and created a hole in a bedroom wall. Gates is also accused of striking Lavender and pushing her into a wall.
The 6-foot, 225-pound Gates joined Tampa Bay’s practice squad last September after being released by the Buffalo Bills. He played collegiately at Louisville.
