Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie running back Charles Sims is scheduled to undergo surgery tomorrow on his right ankle following an injury that occurred during Tuesday’s practice. The recovery and rehabilitation schedule for such an injury is typically 12-14 weeks.
The third-round draft pick injured his ankle on Tuesday, after running a wheel route while running with the second-team offense. Sims collapsed on the sideline and had to be helped to the trainers’ area by staff members.
Sims had been receiving plenty of positive reviews at camp before the injury and appeared to be in line for a significant role with the Buccaneers as a rookie. The 6-foot, 214-pound back out of West Virginia picked up 12 yards on three carries and 32 yards on three receptions during Tampa Bay’s 16-10 loss last Friday night at Jacksonville. Now, Sims will start down the road to recovery and is likely a candidate for the PUP list.
