Each NFL team must trim its roster down to 75 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got a head start on Monday by releasing nine players, and there weren’t any surprises.
The Buccaneers released wide receivers Jovon Bouknight, Kyle Smith and Chad Owens, center/guard Jonathan Clinkscale, tackle Jabari Levey, center Nick Mihlhauser, fullback Zach Tuiasosopo and defensive ends Tim Jones and Jeremy Pittman.
“It’s always hard, but you got to do it,” Bucs head coach Jon Gruden said regarding roster cuts. “You have to reduce your roster when it’s time to reduce your roster, we’ve made some tough decisions today, but it doesn’t mean that these guys careers are over. I think that there is a chance that some might come back or some might move on elsewhere. It’s always tough, you spend a lot of time with these guys and you want them to do well.”
The Bucs must part ways with two more players by 4:00 p.m. Tuesday in order to be in compliance with the league-mandated 75-man roster.
Tampa Bay is scheduled to play its 2007 preseason finale against the Houston Texans at Raymond James Stadium on Thursday evening.
Each team will be required trim its roster down to 53 players by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 1.
