Bucs head coach Jon Gruden talked about contingency plans on Monday while informing the media of the status of several injured players on his team.
On Tuesday, the Bucs executed one of those contingency plans by making a few roster moves.
With Bucs starting cornerback Brian Kelly considered questionable for Sunday’s game vs. New Orleans due to a groin injury, Tampa Bay signed CB Sammy Davis.
In order to make room for Davis on their 53-man roster, the Bucs released CB Anthony Madison, whom they claimed off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 2.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Davis signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent in March. He went to training camp with Tampa Bay and played in all four of the Bucs’ preseason contests, notching two tackles, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed.
The former first-round draft pick originally entered the NFL in 2003 with the San Diego Chargers. He’s recorded 152 career tackles, three interceptions and 31 passes defensed while playing for the Chargers and the San Francisco 49ers.
Should Kelly not be able to play vs. the Saints on Sunday, Phillip Buchanon likely would take his place in the starting lineup while Davis or rookie free safety Tanard Jackson, who played cornerback at Syracuse, would play nickel cornerback for the Bucs.
In addition to making those two roster moves, the Bucs released wide receiver Chas Gessner, CB Carlos Hendricks and tight end Matt Herian from the injured reserve list.
