With injuries continuing to mount at One Buccaneer Place, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued to shuffle their roster on Wednesday, making a series of roster moves. The Bucs placed cornerback Torrie Cox, who suffered a torn ACL vs. Jacksonville on Sunday, on injured reserve, as PewterReport.com first reported on Monday night. Cox officially became the 12th player the Bucs have placed on injured reserve this season.
Tampa Bay also signed wide receiver Chas Gessner and released WR Chad Lucas from their 53-man roster.
In addition, the Bucs made two practice squad moves, signing cornerback Darrell Hunter and releasing wide receiver Derrick Hamilton.
Gessner originally entered the NFL with the New England Patriots in 2003 as an undrafted free agent out of Brown. He had a short stint with the New York Jets as a member of their practice squad before joining the Bucs in Jan. of 2006.
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Gessner spent the entire 2006 season on Tampa Bay's practice squad and went to training camp and through preseason with the Bucs in 2007 before sustaining a wrist injury that landed him on injured reserve.
Gessner was waived with an injury settlement on Sept. 1, and by rule he could have signed with any other team but was not permitted to re-sign with the Bucs until eight weeks into the 2007 season. He became eligible to sign with the Bucs on Monday.
“I felt good,” Gessner said of his training camp and preseason performance. “It wasn’t really on me whether I did well or not. I did the best I could. I did well enough to be a guy that gets called back when some injuries occur.”
Lucas spent the majority of the first half of the season on the practice squad before being called up to the active roster last week. He averaged 17.5 yards per kickoff on two attempts against Jacksonville and saw limited action on offense.
Hunter (5-11, 211) played collegiately at Miami of Ohio and originally entered the NFL in 2006 as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals. He spent December of 2006 on the team's active roster and recorded one tackle on defense and another on special teams.
Tampa Bay is expected to make at least one more roster move sometime this week as it still has one available spot on its 53-man roster.
