One of the few success stories on the Buccaneer’s defense last year was cornerback Johnthan Banks.
Midway through his second season the Mississippi State product started coming into his own, using his unique size and flexibility, while matching up against premeier wide receivers. Banks’ steady rise left many impressed, including a fellow member of the secondary who says the 6-foot-2 corner is here to stay.

“Some people, they see some success and then level off,” said cornerback Alterraun Verner after practice Tuesday. “But with him, I always see him trying to get better and use what he’s physically gifted with – his size, his long arms, he can run and make plays on the ball. You just see him utilizing that more and trusting in his size and physicality.”
Like the rest of the secondary, Banks spent the better half of last season learning the system. But as the third-year pro enters his second season in the Tampa 2 defense, Verner believes he’s even more confident and receivers around the league should be put on notice.
“I think that’s the big thing; he just has so much more confidence,” Verner said. “He’s a heck of a football player. I think if he put his mind to it, he could guard anybody. And he’s starting to see that and starting to really play like it.”
Banks has looked sound in coverage the past few practices, sizing up and guarding one of the Bucs’ numerous 6-foot-5 receivers. If training camp is any indication, expect a strong 2015 campaign from Johnthan Banks.
