PEWTERREPORT.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT – 10/21/08 pewterreportjf: Hello, Bucs fans. Let the PewterReport.com chat session begin. antcam: I just dont understand what Gruden is trying to accomplish detroitbuc: nothing delraypt: hey jim whats ur take on garcia not willing to throw in the end zone? detroitbuc: Gru is a bum delraypt: 4 trips in the red zone and no TD is an issue, right?? antcam: heck yeah detroitbuc: yep antcam: a major one guest: could we see sergey ivanov get called up? is he any good? antcam: it just didnt start this week. it's been like that all season pewterreportjf: delraypt – I'm not sure if Jeff Garcia isn't willing to throw to the end zone or if he's just running the plays that are being called by Jon Gruden. Put it this way, Gruden has pulled his quarterback when there are too many plays left on the field that aren't being executed in the passing game. If Garcia is indeed not getting it done, particularly in the red zone, Gruden will make a change. If he doesn't, it tells me Garcia is running the plays he's supposed to run. delraypt: I love our defense, they hold opponents wekk in and week out, but our offense cannot sustain drives and put points on the board, Jim what do you think we need to do to change this? kybucfan: Hey JF – Has there been any thought to giving Luke a try @ starting QB this season? detroitbuc: and be like this as long as he is coach pewterreportjf: delraypt – To say Tampa Bay's red zone offense is an issue is an understatement. The Bucs offense is driving, but it's not closing the deal, and at the end of the day/game that's all that matters. antcam: Well buckle up it's going to be a long ride guest: too bad luck isn't 35 guest: luke that is delraypt: what do you think Jim is it Gruden play calls or Garcia scrambling outside a protected pocket and getting antsy?? detroitbuc: am just done with our O antcam: JF Does every play have an deep option? When were not in max protect. pewterreportjf: One interesting note I'll make about Jon Gruden, whom I've been critical off at times this season because I have higher expectations for his offense than in previous years. One highly respected defensive player told me today that the offensive playcalling was not the problem. I thought that was interesting seeing as the defense could easily become frustrated with the offense at this point, especially after holding Dallas to under 200 yards of offense. I respect this player's opinion a lot, so perhaps the playcalling isn't as much of an issue as the execution. But either way that falls on the head coach. guest: Well if Garcia doesnt get pulled, as you stated it would mean he is running plays that are being called then when does Gruden shoulder the blame for the ineptness of this offense? guest: how much are defensive players in on playcalling? antcam: he does every week. I don't know if he is sincere are not pewterreportjf: kybucsfan – For whatever reason, the Bucs coaching staff isn't as high on Luke McCown as others are. The knock on him is that he holds onto the ball too long. For the Bucs to go to McCown, I think they'd have to have another injury to Garcia or they feel like their season has no chance of ending in the playoffs. I'd like to see what McCown can do personally, but I don't think we're going to see McCown this year. detroitbuc: will Benntte every play kybucfan: Gotcha – thx guest: will there be a buc blitz tomorrow? bucsfan4ever: Watching the end of the game it seems that Garcia got happy feet more than he had to and so his throws were not good delraypt: Jim, dont you think we need Garcia or a quaterback that can extend the field and take us in the end zone more often?? Is Garcia the guy or do you think we should go to McGown? antcam: JF Does every play have an deep option? When were not in max protect pewterreportjf: antcam – I don't have a copy of Jon Gruden's playbook, but there are deep routes that are run. The offense, however, attacks mostly in the short to intermediate part of the field. I'd like to see more bootlegs, rollouts and screens in Gruden's offense. guest: So basically the offense will continue to flounder because gruden doesnt want to see what a quarterback brings, and the team will be elft looking for another qb next season great guest: Do think Garcia is doing the same as Greise in not stretching the field because of fear of a turnover and being benched talib 25: Will B.J. Askew be back for this week and did Jameel Cook help or hurt us at FB? delraypt: Yea Jim in the Dallas 3-4 defense dont you think we would of been successful with some screen passes? guest: garcia threw the ball down field effectively last year bucsfan4ever: How is Flip doing JF? Any word on if he is going IR? pewterreportjf: guest – Jon Gruden has to be at least part of the blame for Tampa Bay's inability to put the ball in the end zone. He's the playcaller, and these are his players, the ones he and general manager Bruce Allen drafted and the ones they signed in free agency. This is exactly why I raised the expectation bar for the offense's production this year. The offense is not living up to expectations. detroitbuc: for 7 years its been the same wac O under gru delraypt: Jim, also, on that last drive with timeouts left and needing to get 5 yards with just under a minute left where was any trick plays by Gruden? A drawy? or something to fool Dallas, but to just drop straight back and Garcia getting happy feet didnt work guest: Are we calling for gruden's head? pewterreportjf: talib 25 – It sounded to me on Monday from hearing Jon Gruden answer questions from the media that B.J. Askew had a good chance of returning to the starting lineup this week. That would make Jameel Cook the backup and mainly a special teams contributor. The Bucs have sorely missed Askew. They need him back so they can move Earnest Graham back to tailback exclusively. delraypt: Jim, also, on that last drive with timeouts left and needing to get 5 yards with just under a minute left where was any trick plays by Gruden? A drawy? or something to fool Dallas, but to just drop straight back and Garcia getting happy feet didnt work pewterreportjf: delaypt – I don't understand why there were no screen passes called over the middle, which is where a lot of the pressure came from. A tight end screen or a halfback screen … something, anything. buc4life79: the whole team is to blame for the loss…penaltys really killed us…. delraypt: Jim does Gruden have any trick plays to run? guest: no pewterreportjf: guest – There was a telling dropoff in Garcia's arm strength this offseason. We reported it back in May, I believe. I'm not saying Garcia's arm is weak, but it doesn't appear to be as strong as it was last year. bucsfan4ever: you mean those ghost penalties after Ronda's detroitbuc: he is the trick antcam: I heard Coach Donoan, the Old UGA coach, say the Vols might make a push for Gruden if they decide to let go of Fulmer. They tied Gruden to the job through his wife. talib 25: Now that the Bucs released Anthony Davis, would Jeremy Zuttah be the backup LT and RT? delraypt: Well with this sh**ty performance sunday, I still beleive in our team, our defense will always keep us in the game!! guest: trueblood played LT in college bucsfan4ever: How is Flip doing? buc4life79: LOOK…DALLAS GOT CALLED OUT AND DELIVERED…ENOUGH SAID pewterreportjf: delraypt – I think the conservative nature of Jon Gruden's offense has a lot to do with what he has in the defense. I think he feels a responsibility to the defense not to put them in bad situations in terms of risking turnovers. However, the Denver and Dallas games prove that even if your defense dominates, it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to win the game. Touchdowns win games, not field goals. delraypt: Jim how do you think the bucs end the season? div winner? wild card or shut out of playoffs? buc4life79: 10-6 detroitbuc: 9-7 guest: 11-5 pewterreportjf: delray – Yes, Jon Gruden has plenty of trick plays to run, but he only runs them in training camp and the offseason, or so it seems. I can remember one trick play the Bucs ran last year in New Orleans, but Gruden has plenty more. buc4life79: we will win division talib 25: When Joey Galloway is fully healthy, will he get his starting position back, or have they given Antonio Bryant the starting job no matter what? antcam: JF I heard Coach Donoan, the Old UGA coach, say the Vols might make a push for Gruden if they decide to let go of Fulmer. They tied Gruden to the job through his wife. Have you heard anything about this delraypt: Yea I have read that Gruden relies on his defense, but isnt he supposed to be this offenseive guru? Monte does his job where is Gruden and his offense. If both where on par we would be lights out!! pewterreportjf: talib 25 – The Bucs felt comfortable releasing Anthony Davis because of the progress made by James Lee, who joined the team at the beginning of the season. Jeremy Zuttah is the backup left guard and right guard, but Lee is the backup left tackle. buc4life79: our offense isnt that bad….you can have a off game…think were doin pretty good detroitbuc: we need the running game to get going guest: Is Penn in a contract year? delraypt: in 2002 we had a defense that scored a ridiculous amount of TDs that won games for us. that doesnt happen alot. this year our dee is not letting teams score, but we have to score, Jim what do you think we need to do to score points????? pewterreportjf: bucsfan4ever – From what we're hearing, Jermaine Phillips broke his arm and is scheduled to have surgery. He has not been placed on injured reserve, or at least not yet. We'll probably learn more tomorrow at One Buc Place. buc4life79: we do need to run the ball more…u cant go away from it just because it doesnt work at first bucsfan4ever: Dang hate to lose Flip delraypt: what do you think Jim is it Gruden play calls or Garcia scrambling outside a protected pocket and getting antsy?? buc4life79: true buc4life79: both guest: hey JF has a defense ever gone the whole season without giving up a defensive td? pewterreportjf: delraypt – I don't think the Bucs will win the NFC South division. I think they will make a push, but Carolina's remaining schedule is very favorable. The Bucs-Panthers game in Carolina will be huge. The Bucs have a favorable remaining schedule, but their offense needs to find a way to score touchdowns. Otherwise, I see one-and-done in the playoffs again for the Bucs. buc4life79: you dont always throw the ball on 3rd and one or 3rd and 2 all the time niutbbucfan: a defensive rushing TD, sorry forgot rushing detroitbuc: how long will ownership keep going for one and done????? pewterreportjf: I'll add that I believe Tampa Bay's defense is capable of helping the Buccaneers make a real run at the Super Bowl. The offense needs to do its part. If that happens, the Bucs could be the team to beat in the NFC. guest: gruden should be fired if that happens Jim delraypt: Jim how bad do you think this lose cost us in winning the division? buc4life79: i will be in vegas for that game antcam: JF I heard Coach Donoan, the Old UGA coach, say the Vols might make a push for Gruden if they decide to let go of Fulmer. They tied Gruden to the job through his wife. Have you heard anything about this pewterreportjf: guest – No, a defense has never gone a whole season without giving up a touchdown, but the Bucs' defense hasn't given up a rushing TD through eight games, which is pretty darn impressive if you ask me. buc4life79: nothing in the division delraypt: Jim how bad do you think this lose cost us in winning the division? buc4life79: were tied with carolina they have better overall record pewterreportjf: delraypt – I'd be shocked if the loss in Dallas (or Denver) doesn't come back to bite the Bucs. Tampa Bay could have easily lost in Chicago, so you can forgive one of the losses, but it's hard to forgive both. niutbbucfan: awesome thanks, thats what i meant to ask, i'm worried about the vikings and chargers other than those games I think our defense can pull it off pewterreportjf: antcam – I haven't heard anything about Jon Gruden wanting to take the job in Tennessee if it becomes available. I know his wife went there. Sounds like it's just a rumor to me. Gruden just signed a contract extension with the Bucs in January. delraypt: true, I have studied the remaining schedules for us and Carolina, I think theirs is a little tougher with games at green bay and giants, what do u think detroitbuc: dont sleep on the loins, our O just cant win on the road antcam: the lions hahaha buc4life79: im more worried bout chiefs than det bmarti5: JF-Any news on Cadillac? delraypt: true, I have studied the remaining schedules for us and Carolina, I think theirs is a little tougher with games at green bay and giants, what do u think buc4life79: letdown b4 bye maybe pewterreportjf: delray – I think you could make a case for Tampa Bay's remaining schedule being easier than Carolina's, but the Bucs simply cannot afford to slip up in Kansas City or Detroit, or vs. Carolina on the road. That could be the game that decides the division, and rightfully so. It will come down to the Bucs and Panthers, but the Falcons and Saints aren't bad, either. talib 25: Which play makers could the Bucs be targeting that will be available in free agency or the draft? Do you think we will make a trade for a WR? delraypt: agree, the monday night game dec 8 in carolina is huge!! buc4life79: chad johnson…lol…gruden likes vets… pewterreportjf: bmart15 – Cadillac is practicing with the Bucs. The team has two weeks to decide on what to do with him (place him on IR or activate him). I still think Tampa Bay will place Williams on injured reserve simply because they don't really need him right now. delraypt: Yea I have read that Gruden relies on his defense, but isnt he supposed to be this offenseive guru? Monte does his job where is Gruden and his offense. If both where on par we would be lights out!! antcam: I wouldnt mind seeing Jacoby Jones in a Bucs UNi guest: Why aren't we running more? Too many passes! buc4life79: jf…you dont think theyll keep him active just in case we go to playoffs to give us a xtra weapon bucsfan4ever: t hurt with EG palying fullback in stead of RB guest: What is our run to pass balance look like? talib 25: Why don't the Bucs want to use Michael Bennett? buc4life79: doesnt mean we have to play him guest: What is Greg Peterson's status/progression? pewterreportjf: Talib 25 – The Bucs will have the most amount of money of any team in the NFL when it comes to salary cap in 2009, but don't expect the Bucs to be the biggest spenders. Their first priority will be re-signing their own free agents and extending their own players' contracts. The Bucs do need to address the wide receiver position, but it's too early to tell how they'll do it. guest: whose him?? buc4life bucsfan4ever: but u would have to give up a player so who do u cut?? buc4life79: caddie delraypt: in 2002 we had a defense that scored a ridiculous amount of TDs that won games for us. that doesnt happen alot. this year our dee is not letting teams score, but we have to score, Jim what do you think we need to do to score points????? guest: oh ok talib 25: Who do you think they'll re-sign and who would they be willing to let go? antcam: might as well take bennett's place guest: i think flip will walk buc4life79: keep caddie active in case of playoffs but we wont have to use him unless we have to pewterreportjf: talib 25 – From what we understand, Jon Gruden doesn't trust Michael Bennett to be a blocker and a guy that can pick up the blitz like Warrick Dunn and Earnest Graham can do. Bennett can run the ball and even catch it, but some believe he's a liability in some aspects/areas of Gruden's offense. guest: I'm starting to get the feeling that the Bucs don't want to get anywhere near the salary cap limit. And not because they want to be compliant, but because they are looking to save a few dollars guest: He wasn't a liability in the preseason talib 25: I'm sure Michael Bennett is disappointed that he re-signed with the Bucs. bucsfan4ever: Is Clifton the return guy now?? We could get rid of DJ? guest: Too bad for bennett antcam: why u say that guest pewterreportjf: Talib 25 – The Bucs would like to re-sign Luke McCown, Phillip Buchanon, Jovan haye and Ryan Sims. They'd like to extend Barrett Ruud, among others. Those are just a few. detroitbuc: to bad for us pewterreportjf: bucsfan4ever – Yes, I believe Clifton Smith will return kickoffs and punts again this week. He did a good job vs. Dallas, but he's got to hold onto the ball. talib 25: Would we activate Michael Spurlock from the PS and try him on returns again? buc4life79: jf….keep caddie active in case of playoffs but we wont have to use him unless we have to…is that a poss antcam: but they trust a rookie? that's asnine guest: cause look at how much cash we have had and still have to spend, and they're not spending it. We're not resigning players. We don't go after any premier players and thats one of our deficiencies. We have no exclamation points on our offense. guest: Just dont see McCown wanting to come and ride the bench should a team offer him a chance to compete for a starting job elsewhere pewterreportjf: Talib 25 – No, the Bucs have no plans to activate Micheal Spurlock right now. It's Clifton Smith's job to lose. guest: Spurlock wasn't that good besides the td bucsfan4ever: Hey he survived that one hit LOL pewterreportjf: Okay, room. I've got to get going. guest: Is Talib 25 running this thing? Thanks for answering everyone! guest: har har buc4life79: later jf…. buc4life79: hahahahaha bucsfan4ever: thanks JF later antcam: there was nobody in FA worth the big dollars. IMO talib 25: But Spurlock looked excellent at WR in training camp and the preseason. talib 25: Better than Dexter Jackson. pewterreportjf: Thanks for bringing the great questions and comments to the PewterReport.com chat session. Take care and enjoy Tampa Bay's game vs. Kansas City on Sunday.
